Keepers Coastal Kitchen shutters doors for new Mi Vecino concept in Southwest Austin

Southwest Austin’s dining scene is about to change. The team behind Keepers Coastal Kitchen announced that the seafood restaurant closed its doors on October 24, making way for a new concept from the same owners.

Roya Hospitality Group’s plan

Keepers Coastal Kitchen opened in 2021 as part of Austin‑based Roya Hospitality Group. After five years of serving the community, the group decided to renovate the space and launch a different coastal concept called Mi Vecino. In a statement to Community Impact, a spokesperson for Roya said the decision was driven by feedback from local residents and an assessment of what the neighborhood was missing.

“We evaluated what was performing well with the neighborhood and took that feedback into consideration along with what we felt like the area was missing,” the spokesperson explained. “The result of that was Mi Vecino, a coastal Mexican concept that is keeping some Keepers favorites while also bringing some other dishes and flair the neighborhood was looking for.”

What to expect from Mi Vecino

Mi Vecino will blend the beloved seafood items that Keepers patrons have come to enjoy with new Mexican‑inspired dishes, creating a menu that reflects both the coastal roots of the original restaurant and the vibrant flavors of Mexican cuisine. While specific menu details have not yet been released, the owners promise that familiar items will remain alongside fresh offerings designed to meet local tastes.

Impact on the community

The closure of Keepers Coastal Kitchen is a routine part of the evolving restaurant landscape in Austin, where entrepreneurs continually adapt to shifting consumer preferences. By listening to neighborhood input, Roya Hospitality Group aims to keep the area’s dining options relevant and appealing. The renovation is expected to create short‑term construction jobs and, once opened, Mi Vecino will provide new employment opportunities for chefs, servers, and support staff.

Local residents who have enjoyed Keepers’ seafood dishes can look forward to a familiar yet refreshed dining experience. The decision underscores the importance of community feedback in shaping the culinary offerings that serve Southwest Austin’s growing population.

Location and timeline

The former Keepers location is at 5701 W. Slaughter Lane, Building D, Austin, Texas. While the exact opening date for Mi Vecino has not been announced, the renovation work is already underway, and the owners anticipate a timely launch that will fill the gap left by Keepers’ closure.

For updates on the progress of the remodel and the official opening date, interested diners can follow Roya Hospitality Group’s social media channels or check local news outlets.
