One of Lexington’s most beloved landmarks is doing more than hosting world-class horse racing — it’s opening its doors to the next generation. Keeneland welcomed 2,600 fifth graders for a special career exploration week, giving local students an up-close look at the wide variety of professional opportunities available at the historic racetrack and equine facility.
The event offered young Lexingtonians a chance to discover careers they might never have considered, from veterinary and agricultural sciences to marketing, hospitality, grounds management, and beyond. For many of the students, a visit to Keeneland provided a first-hand glimpse into an industry that is central to Central Kentucky’s identity and economy.
The career exploration week reflects Keeneland’s longstanding commitment to the broader Lexington community, going well beyond its role as a premier racing and sales venue. By inviting thousands of fifth graders onto its grounds, the organization is helping to spark curiosity and ambition in students at a formative age — planting seeds that could one day grow into meaningful careers right here in the Bluegrass.
Also making headlines this week on the student achievement front, 31 Fayette County Public Schools students were selected for the 2026–27 Junior Achievement Leadership Lexington Youth Program. The competitive program, run by Junior Achievement, is designed to develop leadership skills and civic awareness in young people, connecting them with mentors and real-world experiences across the Lexington community. Being chosen for the program is a significant honor, and these 31 students represent some of the brightest and most motivated young leaders in FCPS.
Together, these two stories paint an encouraging picture of Lexington’s investment in its youth — from iconic local institutions opening their gates to curious fifth graders, to motivated middle and high schoolers stepping into leadership roles that will shape the city’s future.
