Kansas City survivors launch nonprofits to aid breast cancer patients

When Kim Jones and Julie Rudman were diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, they turned personal hardship into community service. Both women, now Kansas City residents, founded nonprofit organizations that provide practical assistance and moral encouragement to anyone impacted by breast cancer.

From diagnosis to action

Jones endured a re‑excision lumpectomy, 40 rounds of chemotherapy and 37 sessions of radiation after discovering a lump in the summer of 2011. Rudman faced invasive lobular carcinoma, a form that often does not form palpable lumps, yet she caught it early and beat the disease. Their shared experience sparked a question: “Is it early enough for us to cure it?” Both answered yes, and they decided to give back.

In 2016, while undergoing reconstruction surgery, Jones launched Sisters Living Beyond the Ribbon. The group organized a breast‑cancer walk on September 26 and now offers transportation and lodging assistance for treatment appointments, as well as education focused on the African‑American community.

Rudman founded The Breast Cancer Club shortly after completing her own treatment. The club functions as a hub for discounts on products and services for patients, and it maintains an online forum where survivors can ask questions and share resources. It also partners with local Goodwill stores to collect gently used bras and related items for donation to patients in need.

Community impact

Both nonprofits emphasize the power of faith and perseverance. “Keep the faith and stay anchored,” Jones advises, while Rudman adds, “This will not define who you are. One day at a time.” Their organizations have quickly become valuable resources for Kansas City residents facing the physical and emotional challenges of breast cancer.

In addition to the founders’ groups, the Kansas City area offers a range of support services, including the American Cancer Society, Bra Couture KC, Cancer Action, the 3929 Foundation, Cleaning for a Reason, United Way, Food for the Cure, Gateway to Hope, Gilda’s Club, and Sharsheret. Together, these groups create a network of assistance that addresses everything from financial strain to transportation barriers.

How to get involved

Residents can support The Breast Cancer Club by donating gently used bras at participating Goodwill locations or by taking advantage of the discount program. Volunteers are welcome to help organize transportation for patients through Sisters Living Beyond the Ribbon, or to assist with educational outreach in the African‑American community.

Both organizations welcome donations, volunteers, and anyone who wishes to share their story. As Jones puts it, “I’m just thankful to be included at the table; this is the other side of it.” Their work exemplifies how personal trials can inspire lasting community benefit, reinforcing the strong family and faith values that define Kansas City.
