Kalapuya Seasons, Volcanic Peaks, and the Best Hike You Haven’t Done Yet: Silver Falls State Park

About forty-five minutes east of Salem, the Cascade foothills pull the landscape into folds of old-growth bigleaf maple, Douglas fir, and basalt canyon walls draped in so much moss they look upholstered. This is where Silver Falls State Park lives — Oregon’s largest state park and, frankly, one of the most spectacular pieces of public land in the entire Pacific Northwest. If you haven’t been, clear your calendar. If you have been, you already know what I’m about to say.

The centerpiece is the Trail of Ten Falls, a 7.9-mile loop that strings together — as the name promises — ten distinct waterfalls. Most of them aren’t polite little trickles, either. South Falls drops 177 feet into a basalt amphitheater and lets you walk directly behind the curtain of water on a carved stone path. North Falls does the same. Standing behind a waterfall while the mist settles on your jacket and the roar surrounds you completely is one of those experiences that bypasses language and goes straight to memory. You’ll think about it for weeks.

The trail itself is well-maintained and clearly marked, winding through canyon corridors and across wooden footbridges that span Silver Creek at various points. Elevation changes are manageable — most of the climbing comes in short, purposeful bursts — though the full loop will earn its place in your legs by the end of the day. If you’re not up for the complete circuit, the South Falls area alone is worth the drive. The viewing platform above the falls and the canyon trail behind it can be done as an out-and-back in well under two hours.

Spring is luminous here — the creek runs high, the deciduous canopy is just leafing out, and the wildflowers scatter across the forest floor in that brief, unrepeatable way. But autumn might be the park’s finest hour. When the bigleaf maples turn in October, the canyon fills with amber and gold light that photographers drive hours to capture. Winter visits, when crowds thin and the falls run at full force, have their own hushed, dramatic quality that’s hard to describe and impossible to forget.

Beyond the waterfall trail, the park offers horseback riding trails, a historic lodge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s (worth a stop just to admire the craftsmanship), picnic areas, and a small day-use beach along the creek where kids wade in summer. The South Falls Lodge area serves as a natural hub, with parking, restrooms, and a seasonal café that does the job well enough after a long hike.

A day-use parking pass runs about five dollars and is available at the trailhead kiosks or in advance through the Oregon State Parks website. Arrive early on summer weekends — the South Falls lot fills by mid-morning and you’ll find yourself circling. Weekday visits in shoulder seasons are the move if you want something close to solitude.

Salem is fortunate to sit within easy reach of remarkable things, and Silver Falls is the most remarkable of them. It is not a secret, and it does not need to be — its size and grandeur absorb visitors gracefully. Go once and you will establish a habit. That part is guaranteed.
