Kalamazoo Expands Winter Shelter to 210 Beds, Adds Extra Space for Extreme Weather

Kalamazoo is preparing for the coming winter by expanding its shelter program to ensure that people experiencing homelessness have a safe, warm place to sleep. The program, which began on Nov. 2 and runs through March 31, now provides up to 210 nighttime shelter beds and an extra 25 spaces that can be opened during extreme weather events. More than 200 daytime shelter spaces are also available for those seeking assistance during daylight hours.

Funding and Partnerships

The nearly $980,000 effort is a joint venture of the City of Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, the City of Portage, the Kalamazoo County Continuum of Care and United Way of South Central Michigan. The City of Kalamazoo contributes $450,000, underscoring local government’s commitment to caring for its most vulnerable residents.

Voices from the Community

Bennie Woods, a resident of Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries, has relied on shelter services off and on for about three years. He stresses that homelessness often stems from “bad timing” rather than personal failings such as substance abuse. Woods explained that when a support system—family or friends—disappears, individuals are forced to fend for themselves.

Jenhsu Bishop, executive impact and equity officer with United Way of South Central Michigan, said the increased capacity reflects a concerted effort to meet demand. “We have more beds this year than we did last year, and we continue to anticipate that we’ll be able to meet the needs as folks come in,” Bishop said.

Program Impact and Availability

Last winter, Kalamazoo’s community shelter program logged 18,608 shelter nights over four months and housed as many as 224 people in a single day. The program also connected 282 households with additional support services, demonstrating the broader impact beyond just a roof over one’s head.

Both shelter providers currently have available capacity, and if the winter shelter program reaches full occupancy, Housing Resources Inc. will work to connect individuals with other resources in the area.

How to Access Services

Adults seeking shelter can contact Housing Resources Inc., which coordinates access to the winter shelter. Callers are linked with an intake specialist who gathers basic information and strives to match them with an appropriate bed in less than 20 minutes.

For Woods, the availability of these resources is a matter of simple, practical help. “They do the best they can with what they got,” he said.

Looking Ahead

The winter shelter program will remain in operation through the end of March, providing a critical safety net for Kalamazoo’s homeless population as temperatures drop. Community partners and local officials continue to monitor demand and adjust resources as needed to ensure that no one is left without a place to stay during the harsh winter months.
