Juneteenth Celebrations Return to the Seattle–Tacoma Area With Free Events and the Region’s Biggest Festival

The Seattle–Tacoma area is marking Juneteenth in a big way this week, with a slate of free community events and the return of Washington’s largest Juneteenth celebration to Tacoma.

According to Secret Seattle, five free events are lined up in the Seattle area for Juneteenth on Friday, giving residents across the region plenty of ways to join in the commemoration without any cost at the door.

Meanwhile, FOX 13 Seattle reports that Washington’s largest Juneteenth celebration is back in Tacoma — a beloved annual tradition that draws crowds from across the region to honor the holiday’s significance and uplift the local community through music, culture, and togetherness.

Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom — the last major group to receive word after the end of the Civil War. It became a federal holiday in 2021 and has grown into one of the most widely celebrated days of community pride and reflection across the country.

Whether you’re heading to a free neighborhood event in Seattle or making the trip to Tacoma’s signature festival, this Friday offers a wonderful opportunity for families and neighbors to come together and celebrate.
