Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) announced that a data‑security incident at Frontline Education, the third‑party software provider that handles the district’s employee recruitment, applicant tracking, absences and substitute assignments, could have exposed personal information for over 37,000 current and former staff members.
What happened
Frontline Education discovered a “security vulnerability” in one of its software programs on Aug. 14. The flaw allowed unauthorized access to its systems, prompting the company to notify federal law‑enforcement agencies and begin an internal investigation. In October, Frontline informed JCPS that the breach potentially included Social Security numbers, email addresses and home addresses of more than 37,000 employees and former employees.
JCPS response
JCPS officials emphasized that none of the district’s own networks were breached, hacked or otherwise compromised. The district promptly reported the incident to the Kentucky Department of Education commissioner, the state attorney general and the Kentucky State Police commissioner. “We hold Frontline accountable and expect it to continue its own investigation, provide updates as new information becomes available, and fulfill its obligations to impacted individuals and the District,” the district said in a statement.
The district is also accelerating its transition to a new employment‑application system, a move that was already planned before the breach. JCPS expects the migration to be completed by the start of the next school year.
Support for affected employees
Beginning Oct. 26, Frontline began notifying affected individuals by email and U.S. mail, detailing the specific data that may have been exposed. Each impacted person will receive information on how to enroll in two years of free credit‑monitoring and identity‑theft protection services provided by TransUnion.
Frontline has also set up a dedicated call center (1‑800‑759‑7279) to answer questions about the breach and the credit‑monitoring program.
What employees should do
- Watch for notification: Look for a letter or email from Frontline with instructions on enrolling in credit‑monitoring services.
- Monitor credit reports: Take advantage of the free monitoring to watch for any unauthorized activity.
- Stay informed: JCPS will continue to share updates as the investigation progresses.
Data security remains a top priority for school districts that handle sensitive employee information. By moving to a new platform and providing robust identity‑theft protection, JCPS aims to safeguard its workforce while maintaining the trust of teachers, staff and the broader community.
