FORT MEADE, Fla. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit is probing a deadly single-vehicle wreck that ignited after a crash on Alturas Babson Park Cutoff Road and 80 Foot Road on Tuesday, May 5. Deputies say the incident involved a 2014 silver Nissan and left one person dead at the scene. The vehicle caught fire after striking a utility pole, and authorities are working to identify the driver.
According to investigators, the crash happened at 11:18 a.m. while the Nissan was traveling westbound on Alturas Babson Park Cutoff Road, also known locally as ABC Road. Deputies describe the car as moving at a high rate of speed before it left the roadway on the right and collided with a large utility pole. The point of impact was reported at the 3-foot base of the pole, which contributed to catastrophic damage to the vehicle.
Responding officers noted there were no visible brake marks at the scene, which suggests an apparent lack of braking prior to the collision. When the Nissan struck the pole it sustained severe structural damage and quickly became engulfed in flames. First responders worked to extinguish the blaze before any detailed on-scene examination could be completed.
After the fire was put out, emergency crews confirmed there was one fatality connected to the crash. The driver was found badly burned and was unrecognizable, which has complicated immediate identification efforts. Polk County Sheriff’s Office investigators said a positive identification will await autopsy results.
Because the vehicle was heavily burned, deputies could not determine whether safety systems were in use at the time of impact. It remains unknown if the airbags deployed or if the driver was wearing a seatbelt. Those damage and burn patterns are factors forensic teams will examine as the Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit pursues clarity on the sequence of events.
At this stage, investigators have not established why the driver failed to stop or why the vehicle left the roadway. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its on-scene work and evidence collection, including documentation of the crash site, the pole, and vehicle remnants. Forensic analysis and the autopsy will play central roles in answering outstanding questions about identity and cause.
This investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as they become available.
