IBM Launches First Illinois Quantum Computer at Hyde Park Labs, Creating Hundreds of Tech Jobs

HYDE PARK — On Friday, IBM introduced its first quantum computer in Illinois, the IBM Quantum System Two, at the University of Chicago‑affiliated Hyde Park Labs, 5207 S. Harper Ave. The launch was celebrated alongside Governor JB Pritzker as a “major milestone” for the state’s emerging quantum technology corridor.

Quantum System Two and Its Immediate Impact

The new system will operate temporarily at Hyde Park Labs before relocating to the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park in South Chicago once construction is complete. Governor Pritzker said the machine is a “powerful new tool for science, for industry, for possibilities that honestly haven’t even been imagined yet.”

Quantum computing leverages the principles of quantum mechanics to solve problems far beyond the reach of traditional supercomputers. IBM expects the technology to accelerate research in fields such as pharmaceutical discovery, power‑grid efficiency, and high‑energy physics.

National Quantum Algorithm Center

IBM’s system will power the National Quantum Algorithm Center, a development hub that will make quantum algorithms and applications accessible to both academic researchers and non‑quantum companies. “As impressive as the hardware is, the real value of quantum computing is when we start to discover algorithms that matter for industry,” said IBM research director Jay Gambetta.

Partners already involved include Northwestern University, the University of Illinois at Urbana‑Champaign, Fermilab, Deloitte and AbbVie. UChicago President Paul Alivisatos noted that recent experiments with the system demonstrated “quantum advantage,” meaning it performed calculations unattainable by classical computers.

Job Creation and Economic Growth

The announcement aligns with IBM’s earlier pledge to create 750 full‑time positions at its FutureNow Chicago hub in the South Side quantum park. To date, 250 of those jobs have been filled, spanning app development, software engineering, data analysis, technical leadership and administrative roles. The state estimates the project will generate $19 million in tax credits in exchange for meeting job‑creation targets by the end of 2030.

Governor Pritzker emphasized that the quantum campus represents a “powerful new opportunity for economic growth” and pledged to keep working families at the core of its success. While IBM and fellow tenant PsiQuantum have announced a combined 900 jobs, the governor could not confirm additional job commitments from other tenants.

Community leaders have expressed mixed reactions. Some South Side residents see the development as a chance to revitalize neighborhoods that have suffered from disinvestment since the decline of the steel industry. Others have organized to seek a community‑benefits agreement, urging developers and officials to put job‑creation promises in writing. A few groups remain opposed, citing concerns about environmental impact and potential gentrification.

Looking Ahead

State officials project that the quantum ecosystem could eventually support “thousands of jobs” and attract billions of dollars in investment. Brad Johnson, CEO of tech nonprofit P33, forecasts 177,000 quantum‑related jobs in the region by 2035. As the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park takes shape, the partnership between IBM, state government and local universities aims to position Chicago as a national leader in the next generation of computing technology.

For residents interested in the economic and educational opportunities tied to the quantum hub, the University of Chicago and state agencies plan a series of public forums later this year.
