Hyundai Motor Manufacturing announced a nearly $450 million investment to expand its Montgomery, Alabama plant, a development that local officials say will strengthen the region’s manufacturing base and create additional high‑paying jobs.
Governor Kay Ivey, who attended the announcement with Hyundai executives, said the infusion of “near a half‑billion with a B dollars investment in new vehicle production and engine expansion capabilities will keep Hyundai at the forefront of automobile development in America four years to come,” underscoring the project’s alignment with the state’s economic priorities.
The expansion will broaden engine production to support hybrid and extended‑range electric‑vehicle technologies, and the plant will be prepared for future production of the new Santa Fe and Tucson models. Hyundai also plans enhancements to its powertrain operations to accommodate additional engine variants, increasing manufacturing flexibility to meet evolving customer demand.
According to WAKA, the Montgomery plant currently employs 4,200 team members, and together with its suppliers generates an annual economic impact of more than $5 billion. The facility contributes roughly $100 million in state tax revenue and over $12 million in local tax revenue each year. Since production began in 2005, total investment in the site has reached nearly $2.2 billion.
Kyung‑Wha Kang, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, described the investment as “an outstanding example of the ROK‑US alliance maturing and deepening into a close partnership for the shared prosperity of our peoples,” highlighting the broader diplomatic significance of the project.
What’s next: Hyundai officials indicated that the expansion work will commence later this year, with production of the new vehicle models and upgraded engine lines expected to ramp up over the next several years, providing ongoing employment opportunities for Montgomery residents.
