House Race in NY‑17th District Heats Up as Lawler and Conley Campaign Across Rockland County

Rockland County, New York – The contest for New York’s 17th Congressional District has entered its final stretch, with Republican incumbent Rep. Mike Lawler and Democratic nominee Cait Conley crisscrossing the area to win over voters. The race, which polls show is within the margin of error, has drawn national attention, prompting House Speaker Mike Johnson to appear in Orangeburg on Tuesday to back Lawler.

Speaker Johnson backs Lawler’s record

“Everybody around America is watching this election. Everybody,” Johnson said, emphasizing the national significance of the district’s outcome. He praised Lawler’s performance in office, noting, “Because he has been so good, because he’s so effective for New York and for America, we’ve had an extraordinary record.” Johnson’s endorsement underscores the Trump administration’s focus on retaining House control in key swing districts.

Lawler highlights property‑tax relief

Lawler, seeking a third term, centered his message on property taxes, a top concern for families in Rockland and Westchester counties. “That matters to many families in Rockland and Westchester, because they want a representative who understands that their property tax bill is usually the biggest one they get for a year,” he told a gathering in Orangeburg. Lawler also stressed his willingness to break with his party on the state and local tax deduction (SALT), stating, “I said from the very beginning that I would never support a tax bill that did not lift the cap on SALT and provide real tax relief to my constituents.”

Conley counters with veteran credentials

Democratic challenger Cait Conley, an Army veteran, campaigned with health‑care workers in Suffern on Tuesday. Over the weekend, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who would become speaker if Democrats gain control of the House, joined Conley on the trail. Conley contrasted her sixteen years of active duty, including six overseas tours, with Lawler’s background as a political operative, consultant, oil‑and‑gas utility lobbyist, and politician. “Sixteen years on active duty, six tours overseas. Mike Lawler, for the same period of time was a political operative, political consultant, oil and gas utility lobbyist and politician,” Conley said.

Policy disagreements and campaign spending

Conley criticized Lawler’s stance on the SALT issue, arguing that the temporary increase to a $40,000 cap will revert to $10,000 in 2030, calling the proposal a lie. “They did a temporary bump up to $40,000 that comes crashing back down to $10,000 in 2030. And so, this goes back to Mike Lawler can’t help but lie. He has nothing good to run on. Even the good he’s trying to frame is a lie,” she asserted.

Both campaigns are expected to spend roughly $60 million combined, a figure that underscores the high stakes of the race. While the exact allocation of funds remains unclear, the heavy spending reflects the district’s strategic importance for both parties as they vie for control of the House.

What voters should watch

Voters in the 17th District should pay close attention to each candidate’s position on property‑tax relief, the SALT deduction, and broader economic policies that affect families. Lawler’s claim of breaking with his party on tax issues may appeal to moderate voters, while Conley’s veteran background and focus on health‑care workers could resonate with constituents seeking a candidate with direct service experience.

As the campaign enters its final days, both sides will likely increase outreach in key towns such as Rockland, Suffern, and surrounding communities. The outcome will not only shape representation for the district but also influence the broader balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives.
