Holy Cross expands primary care to serve 3,000 former Taos Whole Health patients

Holy Cross Medical Center announced that its primary‑care team will take on the roughly 3,000 patients who lost a physician when Taos Whole Health Integrative Care shut its doors in mid‑October. The closed clinic had cared for about 3,000 individuals, including 500 children.

Leadership says capacity is ready

Hospital CEO James Kiser shared the plan at the Oct. 28 board meeting. Chief operating officer Susan Romansky explained that the hospital has recently “upsized” its primary‑care capacity. Holy Cross now has four primary‑care doctors and a fifth, Dr. Angel Vigo, will start next week. Romansky believes the five‑provider team can cover the displaced patients and others seeking care.

“We have been able to schedule every patient who has called so far,” Romansky said of the 2,500 adult patients. Front‑office staff added that appointments remain open for new patients through the end of the year. The Primary Care Clinic is located in Plaza de Colores, 330 Paseo Del Pueblo Sur.

Continuity for pediatric patients

Former Taos Whole Health pediatric provider Morgan Weyer, PA‑C, will join Holy Cross in December, ensuring continuity for families who transfer.

Future facility expands capacity

Construction is under way on a new primary and urgent‑care building on Weimer Road. When completed, the site will accommodate ten primary‑care doctors plus additional urgent‑care and same‑day providers. The projected finish date is December 2027, according to contractor supervisor Mike Foley.

Funding for the project has been trimmed. An original $22.5 million allocation reverted to the state’s General Fund, reducing the building size from a planned 40,000 sq ft to about 19,000 sq ft. The revised $17 million project will be funded largely by remaining state money, with Taos County covering the balance.

Medicaid funding concerns

Hospital CFO Connie Prewitt reported that Holy Cross is currently ahead of budget, but CEO Kiser warned of upcoming fiscal challenges. He cited the elimination of $1 trillion in federal Medicaid funding under President Donald Trump’s “One, Big Beautiful Bill Act,” noting that roughly 44 percent of New Mexicans rely on Medicaid.

Kiser added that large commercial insurers are posting strong profits while denying legitimate claims, creating additional administrative burdens for hospital staff.

Community impact

Romansky emphasized the goal of providing preventive care to keep simple issues, such as urinary‑tract infections, from escalating into costly emergency‑room visits. By expanding primary‑care access, Holy Cross hopes to reduce emergency‑department strain and improve health outcomes for the Taos community.
