On Wednesday night, a shooting in the Banner Lake area of Hobe Sound claimed the life of a young man, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred along Southeast Citrus Way, prompting a rapid response from deputies who spent several hours investigating the scene.
Grandmother’s harrowing account
Harriet Ford Greg, who identified the victim as her grandson, recounted the moments after the shots rang out. While she was in bed, she heard three distinct gunshots and immediately feared for her grandson, who had been out that night.
“I stepped outside and saw him on the ground as first responders tried to save him,” Greg said. “[I saw him] laying on the ground out there and the police officer was reviving him. I thought that he’s not going to make it. It was my grandson. Somebody shot him.”
Sheriff’s Office response
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that one person was detained for questioning in connection with the shooting. Officials said they are continuing their investigation and expect to release additional information on Thursday afternoon.
Greg expressed her determination to stay strong for her family, though she admitted she cannot bring herself to enter the room where her grandson had been staying. “None of this feels real,” she said.
Community impact
The tragic event has left residents of Hobe Sound and the surrounding Banner Lake area shaken. Local law‑enforcement agencies are urging anyone with information to come forward to aid the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have not released further details about the suspect or the motive at this time. The community awaits further updates from the sheriff’s office later this week.
