Henderson, Nev. – The community‑focused barbershop at 101 Barbershop, known for its free Tuesday haircuts for children with special needs, suffered a costly burglary on the morning of Sept. 12. Surveillance video captured a single intruder moving through the shop and emptying the barber stations in less than two minutes, taking an estimated $30,000 worth of clippers, trimmers, edgers, electronics and other tools.
Owner’s mission rooted in family experience
Barbershop owner Stacie Skillman opened the shop in September 2022 after years of difficulty finding a comfortable place for her own son, who is non‑verbal autistic, to get a haircut. “My son is special needs, nonverbal autistic, and we always had a struggle getting him haircuts,” Skillman explained. That personal challenge inspired her to create a welcoming environment for other families facing similar obstacles.
Every Tuesday the shop sets aside 24 appointments for clients with special needs, providing the haircuts completely free of charge. Those slots fill quickly, and Skillman says the appointments are always booked. “I made it a special place where our kiddos can come and be safe and get haircuts every Tuesday for free,” she said.
Impact of the theft
The burglary stripped the shop of essential equipment used during the free‑haircut sessions, as well as tools that hold sentimental value for long‑time barbers. “These are things some of my barbers have had since day one, and I’ve had barbers that have been working 20 years,” Skillman noted. She described the break‑in as a violation of the safe space the team has built for children and families.
Despite the loss, Skillman remains optimistic about the shop’s future. “We’re thriving, and it could have been a lot worse. We’re okay,” she affirmed, emphasizing the resilience of her staff and the community’s support.
Call for community help
Skillman is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the identification or arrest of the suspect. She urges anyone who recognizes the individual in the surveillance footage, witnessed suspicious activity, or knows of anyone attempting to sell a large amount of barber equipment to contact local law enforcement.
The incident underscores the challenges small, family‑oriented businesses can face, even when they serve a vital community need. Henderson residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and support local enterprises that prioritize families and faith‑based values.
