Heber-Overgaard, AZ – A week after a tornado devastated the town, resident Artem shared his frightening encounter while riding his bike home with groceries. He said the wind began as a light breeze, then quickly escalated into a force he could not fight.
Thrown into the Twister
“The wind came and flipped me around to go the other way. The force was just getting more and more,” Artem recalled. He described how his bike was ripped from his hands and launched into the air, leaving him to confront the full fury of the twister.
“Stuff was hitting me in the back, the neck. Threw me in the mud, tumbled, and then it was over,” he said, describing the chaotic moments before the storm subsided.
Medical Response and Recovery
Firefighters arrived quickly, transporting Artem to a local hospital. He was covered in mud, wore a neck brace, and underwent a CT scan. “They gave me medication, and then they looked at the scan and said there’s no broken bones. Everything was OK,” he reported.
Artem spent the next two days in significant pain and shock, struggling to sleep despite doctors’ orders to rest. “I was so sore the first two days and just in shock. I couldn’t sleep,” he said.
Bike Destroyed, Community Steps In
The tornado left Artem’s bike beyond repair. “The bike was wrecked. Everything was bent and snapped. The metal broke and snapped,” he explained.
Local nonprofit Amigos Brotherhood Charities located Artem after the storm and offered to replace his bike. A group representative said the new bike would be funded through community donations and outreach, and they would drive Artem to Show Low to select a suitable replacement, acknowledging his lack of transportation.
“Thank you so much, appreciate it, much love,” Artem expressed gratitude for the assistance.
Community Resilience
Artem’s story underscores the resilience and compassion that define Heber-Overgaard’s response to natural disasters. Neighbors and charitable groups have rallied to support those affected, reinforcing the town’s strong sense of family and faith.
As the community continues to rebuild, stories like Artem’s remind residents of the importance of looking out for one another and the vital role local charities play in recovery efforts.
