West Allis, Wis. — The Harvey Kuenn Foundation continues the late Brewers manager’s legacy by helping local children obtain prosthetic limbs and participate in sports. Founded by Harvey Kuenn Jr. after his father’s death in 1988, the nonprofit works with the Hanger Clinic to cover the cost of prosthetic devices for kids in need.
Legacy rooted in perseverance
Harvey Kuenn, a West Allis native who led the 1982 Brewers to the franchise’s first World Series, overcame a blood clot that required amputation of his right leg below the knee. He managed the team in the 1982 World Series with a wooden prosthetic leg, a testament to his determination.
“He got his prosthetic leg, he was, I think, 49,” Kuenn Jr. recalled in a July interview. “He was already into coaching at the time and then managed in the ’82 World Series with a wooden leg.” The leg now hangs from the ceiling at 4th Base as a good‑luck charm for the Brewers.
Helping families thrive
Jennifer Cosgrove, a West Allis resident, praised the foundation’s impact on her family. Her daughters, Ivy and Anna, were born with congenital limb differences; Ivy was born without tibia bones in both legs. After surgery, Ivy received prosthetic fittings through the foundation’s partnership with Hanger Clinic.
“Seeing the girls really thrive and grow and be willing to tackle any sort of challenge has been so encouraging,” Cosgrove said. “Now they play basketball—both standing and wheelchair—and enjoy camping and traveling.”
Community events and fundraising
The foundation’s annual summer golf outing raises the bulk of its funds, and a recent July picnic brought together families of children who use prosthetic devices. Certified prosthetist Mafer Larraga Martinez of Hanger Clinic noted the importance of peer support: “It’s really good for them to see other kids that use prosthetic devices. They don’t have to explain anything. It’s just part of who they are.”
Looking ahead, the foundation plans to expand its fundraising efforts and continue sponsoring Little League baseball in West Allis.
