Guardians rally past White Sox 2-0 to win AL Division series

CLEVELAND — In a dramatic finish to the American League Division Series, the Cleveland Guardians overcame a 0-2 series hole to beat the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on Saturday night. The victory sends Cleveland to the AL Championship Series, where they will open the best‑of‑seven against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.

Pitching dominance fuels comeback

Starter Gavin Williams delivered a historic performance, recording 12 strikeouts in nine innings – a postseason record for the franchise. He allowed only one hit, a knuckle‑curve from Kyle Teel that slipped into right field with two outs in the sixth inning, and kept the White Sox offense at bay.

Williams became just the third pitcher in postseason history to close one game and start the next when his team faced elimination in both. His 22 swing‑and‑miss pitches and 24 total strikeouts over three games rank second‑most in a best‑of‑five series.

Ramirez provides the offense

Jose Ramirez supplied the only runs, homering on a pitch just 0.74 feet above the ground – the lowest‑altitude postseason home run on record since Statcast began tracking in 2008. His blast came off Sean Burke and gave Cleveland a two‑run lead that held for the remainder of the game.

Earlier, Steven Kwan singled to start the fourth inning, setting the stage for Ramirez’s second straight game‑long homer. The hit also marked the lowest‑altitude home run of Ramirez’s 14‑year career.

Defensive highlights

After Williams exited, reliever Erik Sabrowski struck out Munetaka Murakami on a foul tip, then was followed by Hunter Gaddis, who recorded four outs. The bullpen closed the game with Cade Smith earning his first career five‑out save, striking out the side in the ninth inning.

White Sox manager Will Venable lamented his team’s inability to generate offense, saying, “It was less about chase and more about being attacked in the zone and swing and miss in the zone.” The White Sox managed only three hits and struck out 75 times over the series.

Historical context

Cleveland joins a select group of teams that have won a best‑of‑five series after trailing 0‑2, becoming the 11th out of 96 such teams. The Guardians/Indians franchise has not won a World Series since 1948, the longest drought in Major League Baseball.

Chicago, the first club to reach the playoffs after three consecutive 100‑loss seasons, last captured a championship in 2005.

Looking ahead

With the series win, the Guardians will travel to Tampa Bay for the AL Championship Series, seeking their first World Series appearance since 2016. The matchup promises a clash of pitching depth and offensive firepower as both clubs aim to advance to the Fall Classic.
