Goldfield Ghost Town Is the Most Fun You’ll Have Stepping Back in Time

Pull off Highway 88 just east of Mesa, right at the foot of the Superstition Mountains, and you’ll find yourself wondering if you’ve accidentally driven onto a movie set. Goldfield Ghost Town has that effect on people. The wooden storefronts, the dusty main street, the faint creak of an old mine shaft — it all clicks into place the moment you step out of the car and the desert air hits your face. This place is the real deal, and it’s one of the most genuinely entertaining half-days you can spend anywhere near Scottsdale.

Goldfield was founded in 1893 after a gold strike in the area sent prospectors scrambling into the Sonoran Desert. The boom lasted only about five years before the ore ran thin and the population scattered, leaving behind the bones of a classic Wild West town. Today, those bones have been lovingly restored and brought back to life — not as a sterile museum, but as an actual living, breathing attraction where you can get your hands dirty, hear some great stories, and eat a solid plate of food while you’re at it.

Start with the Goldfield Mine Tour, which takes you underground into a real, authentic gold mine. Your guide doesn’t pull punches — you learn about the brutal, dangerous reality of 19th-century mining life, the geology of the Superstitions, and the persistent legend of the Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine hidden somewhere in those jagged peaks just above you. Kids love it. Adults love it more than they expect to. Bring a light jacket because it stays cool down there even in the middle of an Arizona summer.

Above ground, the main street is lined with shops, a saloon, a reptile exhibit, and a narrow-gauge railroad that loops around the property — perfect for families with younger children who need a break from walking. On weekends, gunfight reenactments break out on the main street with enough theatrical flair to draw a crowd and produce some genuinely impressive photography. The performers are enthusiastic and surprisingly skilled, and the whole production has a contagious, good-natured energy that keeps everyone entertained.

Grab lunch at the Mammoth Saloon, which serves up burgers, hot dogs, and cold drinks in a setting that looks like it hasn’t changed since the 1890s — though the food quality has definitely improved since then. Afterward, duck into the gold panning station where you can try your own luck in a sluice trough. Most people walk away with a few flakes in a vial of water and a grin they didn’t see coming.

What makes Goldfield worth the short drive from Scottsdale — about 35 to 40 minutes depending on your starting point — is that it never feels overdone or corporate. There’s a scrappy, independent spirit to the whole operation that feels authentic to the place and the history it celebrates. The Superstition Mountains looming behind the whole scene don’t hurt either; on a clear morning, that backdrop is genuinely breathtaking.

If you’re visiting Scottsdale and you’ve already checked off Old Town and the golf courses, take one morning and drive east toward those mountains. Goldfield Ghost Town earns every minute of your time.
