GKN Aerospace announced Tuesday that it will provide up to $100 million in reimbursements to residents and business owners in Garden Grove and the broader Orange County area who were forced to evacuate during the May 21‑26 chemical tank incident at its Transparency Systems facility.
Eligibility and application process
According to the company, anyone who received a mandatory evacuation order from the City of Garden Grove or the Orange County Fire Authority – or who lived in the evacuation zone immediately before the order – may file a claim. Businesses operating within the same zone during the five‑day period are also eligible.
Applicants must submit proof of residency or business operation and can begin the process on GKN’s dedicated claims website. As of Tuesday evening the site was still offline, but the company said it expects the portal to be operational shortly.
What the program covers
The reimbursement program will pay for documented expenses such as lodging, meals, transportation, lost wages and business interruption. There is a $300‑per‑night cap for lodging, and reimbursement is limited to a maximum of five nights per household.
Background and settlement
The claims program follows a $125 million settlement agreement reached two weeks earlier between GKN Aerospace and the Orange County government. The civil settlement includes more than $8.4 million earmarked for emergency response and abatement costs, as well as a safety and monitoring plan that will be overseen by an independent expert for at least seven years. Those safety provisions will take effect once a judge approves the agreement.
Impact on the community
During the emergency, an estimated 13,000 to 17,000 households were evacuated as officials warned of a possible explosion and toxic plume. The reimbursement program aims to alleviate the financial burden many families and local businesses faced during that period.
Local officials have welcomed the program, noting that it provides tangible relief to those affected and demonstrates corporate responsibility in addressing the incident’s fallout.
Residents and business owners who believe they qualify are encouraged to monitor GKN Aerospace’s website for updates and to prepare the necessary documentation for a claim.
