Gears, Grease, and a Little Bit of Glory: Inside Fort Smith’s Museum of Automobiles at Drennen-Scott Historic Site

There are train rides, and then there are train rides. The kind where the whistle actually rattles your chest, where the conductor tips his hat with genuine pride, and where the Arkansas River valley unspools outside your window like something out of a Winslow Homer painting. The Arkansas and Missouri Railroad excursion out of Fort Smith is firmly in that second category, and if you haven’t made time for it yet, let me be the one to nudge you off the platform.

The A&M Railroad has been threading its way through the Boston Mountains since 1917, connecting Fort Smith to Fayetteville along one of the most scenically dramatic rail corridors in the entire South. The excursion trips — which run seasonally and are worth planning your calendar around — depart from the historic Fort Smith depot just off Garrison Avenue, a handsome building that carries the weight of a century’s worth of arrivals and departures. There’s something about standing on that platform, coffee in hand, watching a genuine diesel locomotive ease into position, that makes the modern world feel briefly and mercifully far away.

Once you’re aboard and rolling, the real show begins. The route climbs steadily into the Ozark highlands, crossing trestle bridges that frame jaw-dropping gorge views, curving through dense hardwood forest, and passing through small communities that feel like they’ve been quietly keeping the best secret in western Arkansas. The foliage excursions in October are justifiably legendary — the hillsides go full amber and crimson in a way that passengers have described as almost unreasonably beautiful — but honestly, any season has something to recommend it. Spring brings dogwood blooms. Summer mornings are lush and cool at elevation. Even a crisp November run has a moody, cinematic appeal.

The cars themselves are comfortable and well-maintained, with large windows designed for exactly the kind of lingering, unhurried looking that most of us forget how to do. The staff are knowledgeable and unhurried too, happy to share the history of the line, the engineering feats that made the mountain grades possible, and the stories of the communities the railroad has served across multiple generations.

Round-trip excursions typically run to Van Buren and back or push further north depending on the event, and special themed trips — holiday runs, dinner excursions, photography charters — sell out quickly and for good reason. Tickets are reasonably priced and genuinely worth every cent. If you’re traveling with kids, bring them; if you’re traveling solo or as a couple looking for something quietly extraordinary, bring yourselves.

Fort Smith has no shortage of things to admire — its frontier history, its river, its food scene — but there’s a particular pleasure in discovering that one of its finest experiences moves at thirty miles an hour through the mountains, narrated by a whistle and the clatter of iron on iron. Book the excursion. You’ll want a window seat.
