Hundreds of residents attended a ribbon‑cutting ceremony on Friday, Oct. 30, to celebrate the new Garland Senior Activity Center and to preview the facility before its full opening, scheduled for late November. According to the City of Garland’s civic‑alert notice, the 27,000‑square‑foot building at 601 W. Avenue B will serve as a hub for the city’s senior population, offering a range of recreational and social services.
Mayor Dylan Hedrick highlighted the significance of rebuilding the center on the same site as its predecessor, noting that the downtown square has become “the heart of the city.” He said the center will host “some of our most valuable residents – the ones who helped shape the Garland we are today – our seniors.”
The center includes a 4,700‑square‑foot fitness area, a 4,500‑square-foot fenced courtyard with a covered patio, a group‑exercise room, a catering kitchen, a library, a game room, an immersive classroom, an arts‑and‑crafts room, and a dining room. New amenities feature a covered drop‑off area, accessible parking close to the entrance, dedicated shuttle parking, a pottery kiln, two pickleball courts, and shade trellises on the east and southwest sides of the building.
A veterans memorial is slated for installation at the end of this year or early next year, adding a commemorative element to the site.
The senior center is part of a broader wave of downtown improvements. Earlier in October, the city opened two new fire stations, completed renovations on two existing stations, and unveiled its first‑ever facility dedicated to pickleball, all funded by the record $423.7 million 2019 Build Garland bond program.
City officials say the senior center will provide a safe, accessible gathering place for older adults, supporting health, social interaction, and lifelong learning. The facility’s diverse programming and modern design are intended to meet the evolving needs of Garland’s growing senior community.
What’s next: The center is expected to open its doors to the public by late November. Residents can look forward to a schedule of fitness classes, arts workshops, and community events once the facility becomes fully operational. City leaders will announce the exact date of the veterans memorial dedication later this year.
