Montgomery, Ala. – Friendship Mission, a local nonprofit that operates emergency shelters and a soup kitchen, is launching its annual Empty Bowls fundraiser to help residents facing hunger and homelessness across the River Region.
Event details
The fundraiser is set for Thursday, Nov. 12, at 5:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Trinity Presbyterian Church, located at 1728 S. Hull St. in Montgomery. Attendees can purchase tickets for $30 each or bring a guest for a combined $50 ticket.
Guests will enjoy a selection of locally prepared comfort foods, learn more about Friendship Mission’s services, and participate in a silent auction featuring donated items, services and unique experiences.
Mission focus
Executive Director Tara Davis told Action 8’s Glenn Halbrooks the event is designed to raise both funds and awareness for the organization’s core programs. “Our shelters provide a safe place for families and individuals who have nowhere else to turn,” Davis said. “The soup kitchen offers hot meals every day, ensuring that no one in our community goes to bed hungry.”
Friendship Mission’s emergency shelters serve dozens of families each night, while the soup kitchen serves hundreds of meals weekly. The additional resources generated by the fundraiser will help expand these services, purchase food supplies and maintain the facilities that keep vulnerable residents safe.
How to get involved
Community members who wish to support the cause can purchase tickets online at friendshipmission.org or call the organization directly. Volunteers are also needed to staff the event, set up the silent auction and assist with food service. Those interested in donating auction items or offering their time are encouraged to contact the mission’s office as soon as possible.
“We rely on the generosity of Montgomery families, businesses and churches,” Davis added. “When we come together, we can make a real difference for those who are struggling.”
Why it matters
Hunger and homelessness remain pressing issues in the River Region, with recent local reports indicating a rise in families seeking emergency assistance. By supporting Friendship Mission’s Empty Bowls fundraiser, residents help ensure that essential services remain available and that the community continues to uphold its Christian values of compassion and stewardship.
The event also highlights the broader role of faith‑based organizations in addressing social challenges, reinforcing the partnership between churches, nonprofits and local volunteers that strengthens Montgomery’s social fabric.
