Ann Arbor — The Michigan Wolverines rallied in the second half of Saturday’s Big Ten showdown, turning a 10‑0 deficit into a 24‑17 triumph over the Penn State Nittany Lions. Freshman quarterback Tommy Carr, thrust into the game after an early interception, delivered a breakout performance that could shape the Wolverines’ season.
Early struggles and a change at quarterback
Penn State struck first, capping an opening drive with a 24‑yard field goal by Ryan Barker. The Nittany Lions then dominated time of possession, controlling the ball for nearly two‑thirds of the first half. Michigan’s offense sputtered, and quarterback Bryce Underwood threw two interceptions, the second coming just before halftime.
Coach Kyle Whittingham, seeking to spark his team, turned to true‑freshman Tommy Carr. The 18‑year‑old received a warm ovation from the Big House crowd as he took the reins.
First half growing pains
Carr’s initial series ended quickly with a three‑and‑out, featuring only a single three‑yard pass. However, a turnover by Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht on the next drive handed Carr the ball near midfield, setting the stage for Michigan’s first score.
Running back Bryson Kuzdzal broke free for a 43‑yard rush, delivering the Wolverines their opening touchdown. Later, Carr drove the ball to the Penn State one‑yard line, but a review ruled the play short. Jordan Marshall subsequently punched it in for a six‑yard score, giving Michigan a 14‑3 lead.
Second‑half heroics
Penn State answered in the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap with a touchdown and a successful two‑point conversion, putting the game within a field goal. With five minutes remaining, Becht scrambled, was tackled, and fumbled. Michigan recovered, and Carr seized the moment.
On the ensuing drive, Carr capped his first career touchdown with a 12‑yard run, extending Michigan’s lead to 21‑17. Penn State responded with a touchdown pass from Becht to Chase Sowell, who finished with 11 catches for 151 yards.
The Nittany Lions attempted an on‑side kick, but the Wolverines secured the ball, sealing the win.
Stat line and what’s next
Carr finished 5‑for‑7 for 47 yards, all in the second half, and added a rushing touchdown. The victory improves Michigan’s Big Ten record to 1‑2, keeping the team out of the bottom of the conference. Penn State falls to 3‑4, still searching for consistency.
Looking ahead, Michigan will travel to face defending champion Indiana Hoosiers, while Penn State enjoys a week off before meeting Purdue in State College.
Community impact
The win energizes a fan base that values hard work, perseverance, and family‑centered teamwork—principles that resonate deeply with the local community. Parents and alumni alike praised Carr’s composure, noting his performance as a testament to the program’s focus on developing young leaders both on and off the field.
