In a heartfelt show of community solidarity, Bend photographers and business owners have organized a free family‑portrait event for families of Silver Rail Elementary. The gathering will take place on November 7 at 2:00 p.m. in Alpenglow Park, providing a safe space for families to create lasting memories after the October 15 tragedy.
Event details and purpose
Organizer and Bend native photographer Kylla Miller conceived the idea as a practical way to use her craft to support grieving families. “Our goal is really just to love on the Silver Rail families and for them to feel seen and cared for,” Miller said. The event will feature complimentary portrait sessions, coffee, muffins, treats, sensory toys, and stuffed animals donated by local businesses.
Families are welcome to register via a Google Form, though registration is not required. Covered tents and heaters will be on site in case of cold or wet weather. While the free portraits are reserved for Silver Rail families, the broader Bend community is invited to attend and lend their support.
Community response
Since the announcement, nine photographers have committed to the day, with additional photographers on standby. Approximately 50 Silver Rail families have already expressed interest, and organizers hope to reach even more before the event.
“It quickly grew from something little I thought I could do to this beautiful event, just by the community offering to step up, which was really sweet,” Miller added. The event reflects Bend’s tradition of neighbors helping neighbors, a core value that resonates deeply with local families.
Why the timing matters
The tragedy occurred on a day when Silver Rail students were scheduled for school pictures, leaving many families without the opportunity to capture a milestone. Miller hopes the November 7 gathering will fill that gap, allowing families to document meaningful moments while feeling the support of their community.
“As a community, we’re going to be there for each other,” Miller said. “I love that about being in Bend. I love being a resident here, that we do come together.”
How to get involved
Local businesses have contributed coffee, baked goods, sensory toys, and stuffed animals, underscoring the collaborative spirit of the event. Residents who wish to volunteer, donate supplies, or simply attend are encouraged to visit the event’s Google Form for more information.
The free portrait event stands as a tangible expression of Bend’s commitment to caring for its families, offering both a moment of joy and a reminder that the community stands united in times of hardship.
