Four separate wildfires are burning in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, but recent weather changes have helped firefighters gain ground. The fires are located in Marquette and Baraga counties, with two larger blazes near Marquette and two smaller ones close to Wakefield.
Containment gains on the Ridge and Craig Lake fires
The Ridge Fire, situated northwest of the city of Marquette, was estimated at about 450 acres on Monday and was 20% contained. The Craig Lake Fire, north of Craig Lake State Park, covered roughly 400 acres and was 25% contained. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity slowed fire activity, allowing crews to reinforce containment lines.
Progress on the Black River and Camp 4 fires
Near Wakefield in Gogebic County, the Black River Fire burned around 300 acres and reached 40% containment by Monday night. Rain and rising humidity are expected to further aid suppression efforts. The Camp 4 Fire, also north of Wakefield, was a much smaller incident, burning only 18 acres and achieving full containment.
Evacuations lifted and investigations ongoing
Authorities have lifted evacuation orders for all four incidents, though residents in the affected areas were urged to stay prepared in case conditions change. No injuries or structural damage have been reported.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says the causes of all four fires remain under investigation. The Ridge and Craig Lake fires are still being examined, as are the Black River and Camp 4 fires.
Local fire departments and state resources continue to monitor the situation, ready to respond if the fires spread or weather conditions shift. Residents are encouraged to follow updates from the DNR and local emergency management officials.
