Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded around 10:45 p.m. on Friday to an attempted break‑in at a residence located at 93351 Overseas Highway. The call came after the property’s daughter reviewed surveillance footage, identified the four teenagers, and helped law enforcement locate them.
Teenagers Apprehended Near Tavernier
Deputies tracked the suspects to Cromwell Court in the Tavernier area and took all four boys into custody. During questioning, each teen admitted they tried to force entry into the home. One of the youths disclosed that he had previously broken into the same location on two earlier occasions.
Charges and Juvenile Justice Process
All four teens have been charged with burglary under Florida law. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office notified the youths’ parents and transferred the cases to the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice for further processing. The department will determine appropriate supervision, counseling, or restitution measures in accordance with state juvenile statutes.
Community Safety and Parental Responsibility
County officials praised the swift response of deputies and the vigilance of the homeowner’s family, noting that early detection and cooperation with law enforcement are critical to protecting neighborhoods along the Overseas Highway corridor. Sheriff’s Office spokesperson emphasized that while juveniles are afforded due process, serious offenses such as burglary will be addressed firmly to deter future misconduct.
Local Law‑Enforcement Efforts
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office continues to prioritize public safety on the Keys, deploying patrols and encouraging residents to report suspicious activity. Community members are reminded that surveillance cameras and prompt reporting can significantly aid investigations and help keep families safe.
Parents are urged to discuss the consequences of criminal behavior with their children and to seek guidance from local youth programs that promote positive activities and mentorship.
