Foot Creek Fire 41% Contained Near Buffalo, Crews Plan Burnouts to Secure Line

BUFFALO, WY — The U.S. Forest Service announced Tuesday that the Foot Creek Fire, which ignited about 12 miles west of Buffalo in the Bighorn National Forest, is now 41% contained. The fire, confirmed to be human‑caused, has burned a total of 532 acres.

Containment efforts focus on safety and structure protection

Fire crews have completed a fire‑suppression line around the perimeter of the blaze. Because unburned fuels remain between the fire and the line, the agency plans additional burnouts on Saturday. These controlled burns will reduce the risk of the fire jumping the line and will help protect nearby structures.

Unmanned Aerial Systems (drones) are being deployed to map the incident and to guide the burnouts. The agency warned that smoke from the planned operations may be visible from the highway, and drivers could be asked to slow down for safety.

Overnight staffing and ongoing mop‑up

Engines have been staffed overnight to safeguard homes and other structures in the fire area. Crews are conducting mop‑up operations near several residences, and the evacuation status for nearby homes remains in the “SET” (set‑up) condition, meaning residents should be prepared to leave if conditions worsen.

Fire activity overnight was reported as minimal, but dry conditions are expected through the weekend with the potential for more critical weather on Sunday.

Primary objectives remain public safety and fire size reduction

The Forest Service emphasized that the top priorities are the health and safety of the public and firefighters, as well as protecting structures. The agency’s full‑suppression strategy aims to keep the fire size manageable while allocating resources efficiently.

Local residents are encouraged to stay informed through official Forest Service updates and to follow any road‑closure or traffic‑slow directives. The agency’s proactive use of drones and planned burnouts demonstrates a commitment to protecting Wyoming’s families, property, and natural resources.

What’s next?

Saturday’s burnouts will be the next major tactical move. If weather remains dry, the Forest Service will continue to monitor conditions closely and adjust tactics as needed to maintain containment progress. Community members can expect continued updates via the agency’s social‑media channels and local news outlets.
