Lane County high school boys soccer enters the second round of the Oregon School Activities Association state playoffs on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Five local programs – South Eugene, Springfield, Willamette, Marist Catholic and Pleasant Hill – will take the field, with most games scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
South Eugene vs. Grants Pass (6A)
Top‑seed No. 7 South Eugene (14‑0‑1, 6‑0 Midwestern) hosts No. 23 Grants Pass (10‑5‑1, 7‑3‑1 Southern Oregon). The Axe have not lost all season, conceding only ten goals and never falling in league play. Grants Pass earned its spot by upsetting No. 10 Ida B. Wells in the first round.
“We’re looking for a real strong performance against a team that is ranked much lower than us, but has been somewhat of a nemesis for South Eugene over the last several years,” head coach Pete Peterson said. “We’re not taking Grants Pass lightly at all.” Peterson added that his squad is “peaking at the right time” physically and mentally.
Springfield vs. Summit (5A)
No. 16 Springfield (8‑6, 4‑2 Midwestern) travels to face top‑seed No. 1 Summit (13‑1‑1, 11‑1 Intermountain) at 5 p.m. Springfield earned the final 5A seed after a four‑game winning streak following a mid‑season slump.
The Millers have shown they can compete with the best, posting a 2‑0 win over No. 15 Crescent Valley and a narrow loss to No. 3 Bend. Their defense has been solid, allowing more than two goals only twice all season.
Willamette vs. Silverton (5A)
No. 8 Willamette (7‑5‑3, 4‑1‑1 Midwestern) meets No. 9 Silverton (9‑5, 4‑1 Mid‑Willamette) in a 6 p.m. showdown. Willamette finished atop the 5A Midwestern League, highlighted by two six‑goal outings in October.
Willamette’s 2‑0 regular‑season win over Silverton gives them a psychological edge, while the Foxes have not allowed more than one goal in a game since that loss.
Marist Catholic vs. Cascade (5A)
No. 10 Marist Catholic (10‑3‑2, 9‑1‑2 Sky‑Em) travels to No. 7 Cascade (13‑1‑1, 8‑1‑1 Oregon West) for a 4 p.m. contest. Marist finished second in a strong Sky‑Em league, losing only to league champion Marshfield and to Willamette and Silverton by one goal.
Cascade split its two games against 4A No. 1 Stayton and leads the 5A bracket in goals scored (78) while allowing just seven.
Pleasant Hill vs. Dayton (3A)
No. 14 Pleasant Hill (8‑4‑2, 5‑2‑1 Mountain Valley) faces No. 3 Dayton (13‑2, 6‑0 3A‑Special District 2) at 6 p.m. Pleasant Hill entered the 3A bracket on a four‑game winning streak, while Dayton rides an 11‑game unbeaten run.
The Billies’ best non‑league win was a 3‑1 victory over 2A/1A Pacific, and they will look to extend their momentum against a Dayton team that has not drawn or lost since mid‑September.
What’s next?
Each winner will advance to a Saturday, Nov. 7 matchup to determine who moves on toward a state title. South Eugene’s victor will meet the winner of Cleveland vs. South Medford, while the Springfield‑Summit winner will face the winner of Silverton vs. Willamette. The Marist‑Cascade winner will play the victor of Valley Catholic vs. Baker‑Powder Valley, and Pleasant Hill’s winner will meet the winner of Riverside vs. Brookings‑Harbor.
Lane County fans can look forward to a night of high‑stakes soccer that showcases the talent and dedication of our local student‑athletes.
