Rockwall, Texas – On October 3, the Texas Indian Association (TIA) held the first-ever Garba in Rockwall County, a lively Navratri celebration that filled the gymnasium of J.W. Williams Middle School with music, dance and community spirit. The event ran from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and welcomed families, friends and neighbors from across the county.
Chief Guests Add Civic Honor
Fate Police Chief Ron Winegar and his wife Zelphie, along with Forney Police Chief Carrie White, served as chief guests. Their presence on stage, where they received traditional shawls and mementos, underscored the partnership between local law‑enforcement and the Indian community. The ceremony took place beneath a Texas Indian Association banner flanked by the United States and Indian flags, symbolizing the shared values of both nations.
Traditional Dance and Music
Garba, a folk dance performed in a circular formation, was the centerpiece of the evening. Participants of all ages joined the Garba circle, twirling with Dandiya sticks that were provided free of charge. The school gym was decorated in bright blue, orange and maroon drapes, and a central centerpiece draped in red and marigold added a festive touch. Video from the night shows dozens of dancers in colorful traditional attire moving in unison to live music.
Food, Vendors and Family Fun
Food stalls offered a variety of Indian dishes, with Mom’s Kitchen & Catering and Jagannath Kitchen highlighted as primary vendors. Volunteers circulated throughout the venue, serving guests and ensuring a smooth flow of the program. Children, youth and grandparents were actively involved, posing for photos, helping with the event logistics and sharing the dance floor with their families.
Navratri Traditions Observed
In keeping with Navratri customs, the program concluded with an Aarti ceremony and the distribution of Prasad. TIA members entered through a dedicated gate with free parking, while friends of members received discounted entry. The association also recognized its platinum partner 7‑Eleven, medical partner Merak Health Primary Care, Aspen Dental and other local businesses for their support.
Looking Ahead
By bringing Garba to Rockwall County for the first time, TIA hopes the celebration will become an annual tradition that showcases the joy, music and values of Navratri to the broader community. The organization thanked the school, volunteers, performers and every guest for making the event a memorable success.
