Sioux Falls – The Fight Like a Ninja organization is once again hosting its 11th annual girls hockey tournament, a community‑driven event that honors the memory of Brittany “The Ninja” Corcoran while teaching young athletes the importance of confidence, connection and mental strength.
From Four Teams to Twenty‑Two
What began in 2015 as a modest competition with just four teams has grown into a regional showcase featuring 22 teams from across the Midwest. Founder and Corcoran’s mother, Angela Drake, says the expansion reflects the lasting impact of Brittany’s spirit. “That first year we had just four teams. This year we will welcome 22 teams. That is truly the impact of starting because Brittany mattered,” she explained.
A Tournament About More Than Wins
While the on‑ice action remains a highlight, the tournament’s core mission is to provide a supportive environment where hockey is about more than scores. Participants receive tools to navigate difficult moments, learn that “it’s okay to not be okay,” and understand the value of asking for help. Drake emphasized, “It’s just not okay to stay that way. And here’s some tools to do it.”
Building Confidence and Community
Beyond the games, the event fosters lasting conversations among families, coaches and volunteers. Drake notes that the true measure of success is the dialogue that continues after the rink lights dim. “She would be proud of the help that we’re giving to others, because she strived to do that too,” Drake said, adding that she feels Brittany’s presence in every supportive moment.

The tournament runs from November 6 through November 8 at the Scheels IcePlex in Sioux Falls. Teams will compete in age‑appropriate divisions, and each day will feature skill clinics, mental‑health workshops and opportunities for parents to connect with one another. Supporting Youth Mental Health
In recent years, mental‑health awareness has become a priority for youth sports programs nationwide. By integrating mental‑strength training into a competitive setting, Fight Like a Ninja aligns with broader efforts to reduce stigma and provide practical coping strategies for young athletes. Local schools and community groups have praised the tournament’s holistic approach, noting its potential to inspire confidence both on and off the ice.
As the tournament unfolds, families, coaches and community members are encouraged to attend games, participate in workshops and celebrate the legacy of a young athlete whose nickname—“The Ninja”—continues to inspire a generation of strong, resilient girls.
