Federal Judge Pauses Tree Removal at East Potomac Golf Course Amid Trump’s Golf Vision

Washington, D.C. – On Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Ana Reyes issued an emergency order stopping all tree removal at the historic East Potomac Golf Links until at least Tuesday morning. The ruling comes after the National Park Service (NPS) began a new round of cutting more than 500 trees on Saturday as part of a broader rehabilitation effort.

Judge Orders Testimony

Judge Reyes directed Kevin Griess, superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks, to appear under oath on Monday morning. Griess must explain who authorized the removal of the trees, when the order was received, and why the NPS deemed the trees “that do not contribute to the historic landscape” eligible for removal.

NPS Plan and Trump’s Vision

In a court filing on Friday, the NPS said the project calls for the removal of 169 trees this weekend, with an additional 90 slated for later removal. The agency argues the cuts are necessary to restore the historic character of the golf course and improve playability.

President Donald Trump, who has championed the East Potomac Golf Links as a centerpiece of his broader plan to transform the capital into a premier golf destination, praised the effort as a step toward a “world‑class golf venue” that will attract visitors and showcase American heritage.

Preservationists Challenge the Cuts

The D.C. Preservation League, joined by two local residents who have sued to block the renovation, argued that even if the NPS were granted the benefit of the doubt, the agency should not be given a “suspension of disbelief.” They contend the tree removal threatens the park’s historic integrity and the natural environment.

Both plaintiffs emphasized the importance of preserving mature trees that provide shade, habitat, and aesthetic value to the community. They urged the court to require a more thorough review before any further cutting proceeds.

Legal Context and Next Steps

Judge Reyes’ order does not permanently block the NPS project; it merely pauses the work while the agency provides detailed testimony. The court will consider whether the agency followed proper procedural requirements and whether the tree removal complies with historic preservation standards.

If the NPS can demonstrate that the cuts are essential to the golf course’s rehabilitation and that no viable alternatives exist, the judge may lift the injunction and allow the work to resume. Otherwise, the agency could be required to modify its plan or seek additional approvals.

Community Impact

East Potomac Park is a beloved green space for Washington residents, offering walking trails, picnic areas, and the historic 9‑hole golf course. The temporary halt means the park will remain fully accessible to the public while the legal dispute unfolds.

Local golfers and neighborhood groups have expressed mixed reactions. Some welcome the prospect of an upgraded, high‑profile golf facility that could boost tourism and local pride. Others remain concerned about the loss of mature trees and the potential alteration of the park’s historic character.

What Comes Next

The NPS is expected to submit a detailed affidavit and supporting documents to the court by the end of the week. Following Griess’s testimony, Judge Reyes will schedule a hearing to determine whether the injunction should be extended, modified, or lifted.

Stakeholders on all sides—federal officials, preservation advocates, local golfers, and nearby residents—will be watching closely as the case proceeds, recognizing that the outcome will shape the future of one of Washington’s iconic recreational spaces.
