Richardson, TX – On October 15, the former Dobie Pre‑Kindergarten School reopened its doors as the Esperanza Community Center, a multi‑service hub designed to support the surrounding Esperanza neighborhood from “womb to tomb.” The center now houses a senior center, food pantry, medical and dental clinics, childcare, and a range of educational resources.
Funding and Vision
Dallas County Commissioner Andy Sommerman directed $4 million in Economic and Community Development funds to transform the vacant school into a community resource. “We took a school and gave it a new chapter,” Sommerman said, emphasizing the center’s role in providing comprehensive care for an area where average household income is under $50,000.
Services Offered
Esperanza offers prenatal care, pediatric health services, mental‑health counseling, dentistry, and a full‑service food pantry. A senior center provides activities and assistance for older residents, while a community garden and free after‑school program run by Big Thought give children safe, constructive outlets. The RISD Family Literacy program adds educational support for families seeking to improve reading and learning outcomes.
Community Partnerships
Tom Ervin, chief of staff for Dallas County District 2, highlighted the importance of the partnership with Richardson Independent School District (RISD). “The Esperanza Community Center would not exist if RISD did not believe in and embrace this vision,” Ervin said.
Mike Jasso, RISD’s assistant superintendent of district operations, stressed that the center’s services are essential for student success. “We know that learning doesn’t happen in a vacuum,” he explained, noting that health and stability at home directly impact academic performance.
Local Impact
Former Dallas City Council member Jaynie Schultz praised the project, calling the neighborhood “one of the most vibrant communities in Dallas with huge, huge potential.” She added, “Done well, we can help thousands of young people build strong and healthy futures.”
Ervin also invoked the legacy of former U.S. Rep. Barbara Jordan, saying, “Over 50 years ago, Barbara Jordan asked us to close the gap between the promise and the reality of liberty and justice for all. Hopefully, Esperanza Community Center can bring change to this community so that we can begin to make that promise a reality.”
The center’s opening marks a significant step toward addressing both immediate needs—such as food insecurity and health care access—and long‑term goals of community stability and family well‑being in Richardson.
