East Brewton, Ala. — Over a week after Hurricane Isaias tore through Escambia County, families whose homes were destroyed are finding practical assistance from nearby businesses and volunteer organizations. The storm demolished at least six trailer homes, leaving many residents without shelter or a place to keep their remaining belongings.
Local business steps up with discounted storage
Delbert Berna, owner of BBC Storage, described the damage as “it looked like a bomb.” He said he has not seen the displaced family since the storm and does not know if anyone was injured. To help those who lost affordable housing, Berna is offering discounted storage rates so families can protect what they still have. “Our community right now is suffering,” he said, urging other merchants and residents to lend a hand.
Volunteer groups bring meals and cleanup support
Operation BBQ Relief, a disaster‑relief nonprofit based in Missouri, set up a hot‑meal station at the local Walmart on Monday, providing warm food to residents coping with the aftermath. Just the Crumbs Ministries, a faith‑based organization from Sumrall, Mississippi, also traveled to East Brewton to serve meals and assist with debris removal.
Volunteers Danny Plunkett and Jason Holifield arrived on Sunday and were welcomed “with open arms” by community members. “The people are very friendly. They have just welcomed us with open arms,” they said, noting the strong sense of hospitality that characterizes the area.
Ongoing recovery efforts
In addition to food and storage, local volunteers are helping clear fallen trees, repair damaged fences, and distribute essential supplies. The combined effort of businesses, faith‑based groups and individual volunteers aims to restore stability for families as they begin to rebuild their lives.
Escambia County officials continue to coordinate with state and federal agencies to assess damage and expedite assistance. While power outages persist in some neighborhoods, the community’s response demonstrates resilience and a shared commitment to caring for one another during a challenging time.
