Omaha, Neb. – The South Terminal at Eppley Airport welcomed four brand‑new gate areas this week, a timely upgrade as the region prepares for a busy holiday travel season. The new gates feature larger restrooms—28 stalls per side with four ADA‑accessible stalls each—charging stations at every seat, cup holders, adult changing stations and clear occupancy indicators.
Focus on passenger comfort
Airport Director Mike Roth emphasized that the project’s success lies in attention to the “small details.” “As Omaha continues to grow and the region continues to grow, we want to be able to grow with it and provide services of aircraft and aviation throughout the world,” Roth said.
Future improvements on the horizon
While travelers can use the existing security checkpoints today, Roth announced that a centralized checkpoint will open in February. The new design will route all passengers through a single screening area, and a pedestrian bridge will connect the checkpoint directly to the parking garage—just 150 steps away, according to Roth.
“The checkpoint is centralized. Everybody’s gonna go through the same checkpoint. We’re putting a pedestrian bridge connecting to the garage, so you’re literally 150 steps away from the garage to the checkpoint,” he explained.
Food options and community partnerships
Looking further ahead, the airport plans to add a central pavilion next year that will host a variety of food options, many of which will be local restaurants. Roth said the goal is to showcase Omaha’s culinary scene while giving travelers convenient dining choices.
“I can’t wait for the first day and we can open this up to the public and they are like wow, like what we have been doing just a great facility for the future,” Roth added.
Impact on holiday travelers
The expanded gate capacity and enhanced amenities are expected to ease congestion during the peak travel period. Larger restrooms and improved accessibility address long‑standing passenger concerns, while charging stations and adult changing stations reflect modern traveler needs.
Local businesses are also poised to benefit from increased foot traffic once the food pavilion opens. By partnering with Omaha restaurants, the airport hopes to keep more travel dollars within the community, supporting families and local entrepreneurs.
Continuing construction
Construction will proceed on other phases of the airport’s renovation plan, but Roth assured the public that the project remains on schedule. “We’re committed to delivering a world‑class facility that serves our growing community and supports the broader aviation network,” he said.
Travelers are encouraged to check the airport’s website for real‑time updates on gate assignments, security procedures and parking options as the holiday season approaches.
