Enfield child death highlights need for safer medication practices at home

Enfield, Conn. – The fatal overdose of 12‑year‑old Eve Rogers has become a stark reminder for parents across Connecticut about the dangers of unsecured medication in the home. Rogers was found dead in March after police discovered loose pills, vitamin tablets and a disorganized pill organizer in her bedroom.

Arrests and investigation

Police arrested mother Melanie Federline last month on a charge of risk of injury to a child. Her husband, Anthony Federline, was also taken into custody and charged with sexual assault after DNA evidence linked him to the victim. The arrest warrant detailed a household in disarray, noting overflowing trash, old food left in pans, and dozens of unused medications scattered throughout the home.

According to the Office of the Medical Examiner, Rogers died from acute intoxication with diphenhydramine (Benadryl), fluoxetine (Prozac) and bupropion (Wellbutrin). Her blood contained 23,000 nanograms per milliliter of diphenhydramine—about five times the lethal dose. The cause of death remains undetermined, leaving open whether the ingestion was accidental, suicidal or homicidal.

Medical experts warn against misuse

Dr. John Brancato, director of emergency medicine at Connecticut Children’s Hospital, emphasized that Benadryl should never be used as a sleep aid for children. “A dose of Benadryl is known to cause drowsiness, but it is not hard to overdose, and the toxicity can be severe,” he said. In the past six months, his hospital treated roughly 40 children for Benadryl overdoses.

Brancato urged parents to consider newer, second‑generation antihistamines such as cetirizine (Zyrtec), which have a safer profile. He also stressed basic preventive steps: keep all medications—prescription and over‑the‑counter—in locked containers, store them out of children’s reach, and avoid using any drug as a bedtime aid without a doctor’s guidance.

Calls for parental vigilance

State Senator Saud Anwar, D‑South Windsor and co‑chair of the legislature’s Public Health Committee, called the incident “heartbreaking” and urged a comprehensive approach to prevent accidental overdoses. “Every medicine carries risk,” Anwar said. “We must educate families on safe storage and proper use, especially for children who may be vulnerable to self‑harm.”

Child advocate Christina Ghio echoed the need for vigilance, noting that an average of 16 children per day present to emergency rooms with self‑harm or suicidal thoughts. She urged parents to treat any medication, even those deemed safe, with the same caution as a firearm.

Community response

Local officials have faced criticism for the Department of Children and Families’ (DCF) handling of the case. Anwar questioned whether DCF had thoroughly inspected the home in the week before Rogers’ death. DCF responded that its policy is to interview all household members and that the investigation into the prior incident—Rogers being taken to a police station after a midnight outing—has been closed.

The case also raises broader concerns about the use of over‑the‑counter sleep aids in homes with children who have mental‑health challenges. Rogers’ therapist had reportedly warned about her history of self‑harm, yet the medication was still administered without pediatric consultation.

Practical steps for families

Physicians recommend simple, common‑sense measures: remove screens before bedtime, schedule earlier evening meals, ensure children get ample outdoor activity, and keep all drugs—prescription, over‑the‑counter, and supplements—in a locked box or high cabinet. Parents are also urged to discuss any sleep concerns with a qualified pediatrician rather than relying on home remedies.

As the community mourns Rogers’ loss, local leaders hope the tragedy will serve as a catalyst for stronger household safety practices and more vigilant oversight by child‑welfare agencies.
