Encanto Brewing? No — Phoenix’s True Neighborhood Gem Is Cibo Urban Pizzeria

There is a courtyard in the heart of Phoenix’s Encanto-Palmcroft neighborhood that feels like it was airlifted from a side street in Naples and set down, quietly and without fanfare, beneath a canopy of citrus trees and string lights. The restaurant is Cibo Urban Pizzeria, and if you have not yet made the pilgrimage to this beautifully restored 1913 craftsman bungalow on West Indian School Road, consider this your formal invitation to stop waiting.

Cibo — pronounced chee-bo, Italian for “food” — occupies one of the oldest homes in the neighborhood, and the owners have done something remarkable with the space: they have honored it. The original wood floors creak pleasantly underfoot. The walls are hung with vintage Italian photography and warm, mismatched art. Smaller dining rooms flow from one into the next, each one intimate enough to feel like you have wandered into someone’s home, except that someone’s home happens to have a wood-fired oven and a serious wine list.

The outdoor courtyard, though, is the true prize. On a clear Phoenix evening — and there are so many of them — the patio fills with a mix of longtime locals, first dates, and families who have clearly been coming here for years. Strings of Edison bulbs cast a golden light over the whole scene, and the mild desert air carries with it the faint char of wood smoke from the oven inside. It is, without exaggeration, one of the most romantic settings in the entire city.

Now, to the pizza. Cibo’s Neapolitan-style pies come out of that wood-fired oven blistered and fragrant, with thin, chewy crusts that have just the right amount of char on the underside. The Margherita is as good a benchmark as any: bright San Marzano tomato, fresh mozzarella, a handful of basil, and an honest drizzle of olive oil. Simple, confident, exactly right. The Diavola — spicy salami, fresh mozzarella, a scattering of roasted peppers — is the one you order when you want a little more drama on your plate.

Beyond pizza, the menu ventures into satisfying Italian-American territory: hearty pastas, fresh salads, and a bruschetta board that makes for a fine way to ease into the evening while you study the wine menu. Speaking of which, the Italian-leaning wine list is genuinely well chosen, and the staff will happily talk you through it without making you feel like you are being quizzed.

Service at Cibo has the relaxed warmth of a neighborhood restaurant that has been around long enough — since 2005 — to be comfortable in its own skin. Nobody is rushing you. The meal unfolds at its own pace, and that pace is exactly what Phoenix sometimes needs: an unhurried evening that lingers in the best possible way.

Cibo is located at 603 N. 5th Avenue, just minutes from downtown Phoenix, in the historic Encanto-Palmcroft district. Reservations are available and recommended on weekends, when the courtyard fills quickly. Parking is easy along the surrounding residential streets. Whether you are a Phoenix local who has somehow never made it here or a visitor looking for a dinner that goes beyond the expected, Cibo Urban Pizzeria is the kind of place you will want to return to before you have even finished your last glass of Chianti.
