Emily Walters uncovers WWII letters from famed birdwatcher Jim Vardaman

Emily Vardaman Walters, whose father Jim Vardaman became a household name in the bird‑watching community, has recently uncovered a collection of personal letters that shed new light on his life during World II. The letters, addressed to Vardaman’s mother in Memphis, were written in the early 1940s while he served as a forward observer in the U.S. Army.

A legendary birding career

Jim Vardaman first gained national attention when TIME Magazine featured his ambitious 1979 quest to spot 700 North American bird species in a single year. His relentless pursuit earned him the nickname “Birdman,” a title he embraced with humor. Walters recalls her father’s habit of planning trips around migration and nesting seasons, and she credits him with creating the first bird‑watching social network through his widely read newsletter.

Letters from the front

Among the newly found documents is a November 25, 1942 letter in which Vardaman writes, “This year more than ever before, I know I have so much to be thankful for… The Lord sure has been good to me because my family life has been more than I could ever ask for. The end of the war seems to be fairly close.” The letter reflects both his deep faith and his optimism during a brutal conflict.

Vardaman’s military record includes a Silver Star for gallantry at the Battle of the Bulge, where he served as a forward observer. He later attended the Potsdam Conference, a historic gathering of world leaders that reshaped post‑war Europe.

Birds as a refuge

Even amid the horrors of war, Vardaman continued to write to his mother about birds. “It was an interest, a diversion, a purpose,” Walters says. “Even in the ugliest of times, birds were always there for him.” The letters reveal how his passion for birding provided comfort and a sense of normalcy during the conflict.

Legacy of community

Walters emphasizes that her father’s greatest contribution was building a sense of community among birders. “My dad took the ‘me’ out of birding and put the ‘we’ into birding,” she explains. His newsletter connected enthusiasts across the country, fostering collaboration long before the internet era.

Jim Vardaman passed away in 2007, but his influence endures. Today, bird‑watching clubs and online forums still cite his pioneering spirit. Walters hopes that sharing these wartime letters will inspire both bird lovers and history enthusiasts to appreciate the intertwining of faith, service, and a love of nature.

Continuing the story

Walters plans to digitize the letters and make them available to the public, ensuring that her father’s story—both as a decorated veteran and a beloved birding icon—remains accessible for future generations.
