Emergency room nurse’s assistant adopts rescued dog after tragic case

When a woman living in her car was brought to the Kettering Health Emergency Room in Dayton, Ohio, staff did everything they could to save her life. Unfortunately, the patient could not be revived. Along with her on the stretcher came an older, nameless dog that had been her companion.

Finding a home for the dog

Karley Hilldreth, a nurse’s assistant who had been on duty that night, recalled the moment the staff realized the dog would be left without anyone to care for it. “We called Dayton PD, we called a bunch of animal shelters, but no one could take her,” Hilldreth said. “We were trying to figure it out, and at some point we thought, does anyone want to take the dog home?”

With no family or friends to locate, and with shelters unable to accept another animal due to space constraints, Hilldreth made a quick decision. She took the dog home herself. The animal was later named Honey.

A new beginning for Honey

Just over a week after the emergency room incident, Hilldreth says she has fully committed to keeping Honey. “I don’t want to risk putting her in a shelter where she could be lonely or upset,” she explained. “She just lost her companion and her partner. I can’t let her go back to that situation.”

Honey now enjoys a stable home environment, regular meals, and the companionship of Hilldreth, who works long shifts at the hospital. The nurse’s assistant says the decision to adopt the dog has brought unexpected joy to her life, especially after the emotional strain of the night’s events.

Community response

Neighbors and coworkers have praised Hilldreth’s compassion, noting that her actions reflect the caring spirit often seen among healthcare workers. “It’s a beautiful example of how we can extend our care beyond patients to the animals that are part of their lives,” said a colleague who asked to remain anonymous.

The story has resonated with local animal‑rights groups, who highlighted the need for more resources to accommodate pets of patients in crisis. While shelters are currently at capacity, the community hopes that stories like Honey’s will inspire more adoptions and encourage additional support for animal‑shelter capacity.

Looking ahead

Hilldreth plans to keep Honey for the long term and hopes the dog will become a familiar face at the hospital, bringing comfort to staff and patients alike. “Having her here reminds me of why we do what we do—providing care, love, and a second chance,” she said.

Honey’s adoption underscores the broader message that small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact, both for animals and the people who open their homes to them.
