Elvira Sims Has Painted Old North Knoxville for Twenty Years

On a slow Thursday morning in early October, before the first customer of the day has opened the door, Brenda Romines is already rearranging a shelf of handmade pottery near the front window. She does this most mornings, not because anything is out of place, but because she says the light changes seasonally and the glazes deserve to be seen correctly. That is the kind of detail a person notices after thirty-some years running a craft cooperative.

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center sits on Middle Creek Road in Norris, about twenty-five miles north of downtown Knoxville — close enough to be a reasonable day trip, far enough that you have to mean it. The drive alone earns its keep: you follow the Clinch River corridor up through Anderson County, past farms and tree lines that look more or less the way they did in 1940. Norris itself is a Depression-era planned town, built by the Tennessee Valley Authority alongside the first TVA dam, and it has the unhurried quality of a place that was designed before car culture got its hands on American town planning.

The center has been here since 1970, which means it predates the current enthusiasm for artisan goods by several decades and therefore carries no trace of that aesthetic’s self-consciousness. Nobody here is branding anything as small-batch. The roughly two hundred member artists — potters, weavers, woodturners, jewelers, basketmakers, quilters — are simply making things the way they learned to make them, or the way they figured out on their own after years of trial.

Romines, who manages the cooperative on behalf of its artist-members, will tell you without prompting that the center is not a gallery in the precious sense. It is a shop. Things have prices. You can buy a ceramic mug for twelve dollars or a hand-knotted rug for considerably more, and neither purchase comes with an explanation of why you should feel good about yourself for making it. That absence of performance is itself the draw.

The inventory turns constantly because the member artists bring new work throughout the year, which makes repeat visits worthwhile. A woodturner named Gary McCarter, whose bowls from locally salvaged walnut and cherry tend to disappear within days of arrival, is one reason regulars check in every few weeks. A weaver whose name Romines mentioned but I promptly forgot — retired schoolteacher, has been a member for fifteen years — produces small tapestries that cost between forty and eighty dollars and are genuinely striking. These are not conversation pieces. They are made things, built to last.

The center also runs classes and workshops, though the schedule varies by season and it pays to check ahead. Fall tends to bring the fuller slate. Summer, predictably, draws the most traffic from Norris Dam State Park visitors who wander in half by accident, which is as good a way as any to find the place.

Hours run Tuesday through Saturday, roughly ten to five, though calling before making the drive is not a bad idea. Admission is free. Parking is a gravel lot. The building itself is plain and functional and smells very slightly of linseed oil, which is not a complaint.

Brenda Romines, still moving pottery as the morning light shifted through the window, did not look up when she said this: “People come in expecting a tourist thing and they leave having bought something they’ll keep for thirty years.” She said it the way a person says something they’ve had confirmed enough times that it no longer surprises them.
