Wylie freshman Eliana Williams continued her rapid rise in distance running by setting a new school record and clinching the District 9-6A girls’ cross‑country championship. The 5K victory, posted in 19:12.78, capped a week of standout performances that have already placed her among the top runners in Wylie history.
Record‑breaking run in Arkansas
Two weeks ago, Williams traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival. She finished third overall while shaving six seconds off the previous school record held by Wylie ISD Akin Elementary teacher Katelyn Buckley, posting an 18:32 time. “That race at the Chile Pepper was great, one of the most fun that I have ever run,” Williams said.
District title secured at home
Back in Wylie, the District 9-6A meet presented a tougher field, highlighted by a challenge from fellow Wylie East junior Evangeline Williams, last year’s district champion. Despite the competition, Eliana pulled away just before the two‑mile mark and never looked back, crossing the finish line in 19:12.78 to claim the district crown. The two athletes are not related.
Coach Reynolds praises her talent and support system
Pirates head coach Colton Reynolds, who has watched Eliana develop since her middle‑school days at Raymond Cooper Junior High, said the freshman’s success was expected. “We knew that we had a fast middle‑distance girl coming from Cooper when I got here last year,” Reynolds explained. “She’s got a great family and a lot of support at home, and she was special from the start.” He added that the weather in Arkansas was “phenomenal” and that the competition helped all the girls run well.
Earlier season highlights
Williams entered the season with a strong track background, holding school records in the 800‑meter, 1,600‑meter and 3,200‑meter events. She also captured the district title in the 800‑meter run. Her first cross‑country outing of the year, the Kaufman Run on Aug. 21, produced the third‑fastest 5K time in Wylie history at 18:54.67, despite a brief recovery period after the summer track season. A subsequent victory at the Dustin Rodriguez Invitational saw her win by 12 seconds with a 19:16 finish.
Looking ahead
With a season already marked by record‑breaking performances and a district championship, Williams is poised for further success at the Class 6A state meet. Coach Reynolds noted that while Williams has already proven herself as a seasoned racer, she still has opportunities to be challenged and improve.
Eliana’s achievements underscore the strength of Wylie’s youth athletics program and the supportive community that rallies behind its student‑athletes.
