El Paso, Texas – On Saturday, Ascarate Park transformed into a bustling 16th‑century kingdom as the city welcomed its first Borderlands Renaissance Faire. Hundreds of visitors arrived in full medieval garb, ready to experience live music, combat demonstrations, local food and handcrafted goods.
Immersive themed zones
The fair was organized around three distinct realms: The Mortal Outpost, The Seelie Grove and The Shadow Court. Each zone offered interactive quests, pirate‑themed challenges and historical lore that encouraged attendees to step away from modern distractions and fully engage with the experience.
Family‑friendly entertainment
Programming included fencing exhibitions, sword‑fighting demonstrations, circus acts, period dances, and jesters performing card tricks. Children and adults alike could watch skilled performers reenact medieval combat while local artisans displayed handcrafted wares ranging from leatherwork to woven textiles.
Community voices
“We can make a very small impact on a lot of people and separate the world that you’re in, and just focus on the now and have a good time and just be carefree and have fun,” said Chum, a featured performer. “This is an opportunity to forget the world and leave it behind. Come out and immerse yourself in the magic and mystery of the world. Talk to other people. Leave your devices behind. Just talk to the person in front of you.”
Local teens Zoey and Jetson told ABC‑7 that they spent months crafting their costumes for the event. “I think it’s fun when we can make costumes, put on makeup, and get into character,” they said. “It’s a form of expression, but also using your hands to make something.”
Jetson added, “It’s the costumes, it’s the princesses, it’s the witches, it’s the monsters that everybody else wears—that is the best thing.” Their enthusiasm reflected a broader sentiment among attendees who praised El Paso for hosting an immersive Renaissance festival of this scale for the first time.
Looking ahead
The celebration continues Sunday, with the fair operating from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ascarate Park Pavilion (6900 Delta Dr.). Organizers hope the event will become an annual tradition, providing a family‑friendly outlet for creativity, community bonding and a welcome escape from daily routines.
For families seeking a day of historical fun, live entertainment and local craftsmanship, the Borderlands Renaissance Faire offers a unique way to celebrate heritage and imagination right here in the heart of El Paso.
