Three women from East Texas who were part of the Brookshire Grocery Company Heroes Flight received a special honor at the Military Women’s Memorial, the nation’s only memorial dedicated to women who have served in the armed forces. The ceremony took place at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, where the veterans’ stories were added to the memorial’s permanent registry.
Local heroes share their experiences
KLTV 7’s Blake Holland sat down with the three veterans to discuss the unique challenges they faced while serving. One veteran explained, “The Army doesn’t care that you’re female, doesn’t care that you have a family, doesn’t care that you have children. The mission is first.” She described long 12‑hour shifts and extended periods away from her children, underscoring the sacrifices made by military families.
Another veteran reflected on the significance of the recognition, saying, “It was amazing. But it was also validation, that women do matter. Because so many times as a woman in the military, you get looked over.” She added that being placed “in the forefront, and celebrated like that” affirmed the growing role of women in defense of the nation.
The third veteran expressed humility, noting, “I never thought that my service was that exceptional. I felt like I was just a cog in a big machine.” Her modesty highlights the everyday dedication of countless service members who quietly keep the country safe.
Women’s service in numbers
According to Holland’s reporting, there are currently about 350,000 women in uniform and nearly three million U.S. women veterans. Notably, no woman has ever been drafted into the U.S. military; every female service member has volunteered, demonstrating a strong commitment to country and community.
After the ceremony, the veterans visited additional memorials honoring three of the six branches of the U.S. military. The visits sparked emotional discussions among attendees, reinforcing the deep ties between service, family, and faith that many East Texas families hold dear.
Heroes Flight continues its mission
The Heroes Flight program, sponsored by Brookshire Grocery Company, provides veterans with the opportunity to travel to historic sites and national monuments, fostering a deeper connection to the nation’s heritage. Stories from the program are featured on the Heroes Flight tab at kltv.com, where viewers can watch videos and read more about the journeys of East Texas veterans.
By honoring these women at a national memorial, the ceremony not only celebrated individual sacrifice but also highlighted the broader contribution of women to the defense of liberty, family, and faith across the United States.
