Early voting spikes in Jackson County as voters seek change in pivotal 2026 election

Jackson County Election Board officials say early voting is booming as the 2026 midterm cycle approaches. The board, which administers elections for the county’s municipalities outside Kansas City, recorded 11,329 returned absentee ballots, including 9,748 walk‑in votes that began on Sept. 22 and 8,260 no‑excuse in‑person votes cast since Oct. 20.

Local voters cite urgency and hope for change

At the Jackson County Absentee Office on Independence Square, voters shared why they chose to cast their ballots early. “I think, um, that everybody wants changes, and there will be a lot of people that will want to, uh, to vote on that day, and there will be a long, you know, a lot of long lines,” said Ashante Payne, emphasizing the anticipated turnout.

“I don’t feel a greater sense of urgency. I feel it’s always important to vote,” added Paul Henrich, underscoring the timeless civic duty of participation.

For many, the election feels historic. “This is probably the most consequential in the history of our republic. There’s just so many things going on right now that I think we need to reverse from and get back on course before it’s just too late,” said Robert Brashears, who accompanied his daughter for her first voting experience.

His daughter, Zoe Brashears, a member of Gen Z, echoed the sentiment: “It is my first time voting, and I think it’s important to vote because I’m Gen Z and I feel like a lot of Gen Z aren’t going to go out there and vote. So I think it’s a good way to show that people my age are voting as well.”

Specific concerns motivate early turnout

Voters also highlighted concrete issues driving them to the polls. “I don’t like high prices. I don’t like the problems that are dealing with our immigrants. I think those are terrible. I don’t like the war in Iran. I don’t like much that’s going on right now,” said Marla Lambert, linking economic and foreign‑policy worries to local ballot choices.

Another resident, Lynnette Carter, focused on fiscal stewardship: “Well, I got to get it done. We got to vote, get some of these amendments and bills and everything else on so we can keep some of our money.”

How early voting works in Jackson County

Jackson County voters should remember that residency determines which election board processes their ballot. Residents of Kansas City proper vote through the Kansas City Election Board, while those living in the surrounding county municipalities use the Jackson County Election Board.

The early‑voting period, which began in late September, allows voters to cast absentee ballots in person without providing an excuse, a policy designed to make voting more accessible and to reduce congestion on Election Day. County officials encourage all eligible voters to take advantage of this option, noting that higher early‑voting participation historically leads to smoother election operations and more accurate vote counts.

Looking ahead

With the surge in early voting, county officials anticipate a robust turnout on Election Day. They stress that every ballot matters in shaping the direction of local government, school districts, and state‑wide initiatives that will affect families, businesses, and communities throughout the region.

“The more people who vote early, the more we can ensure that our election is fair, transparent, and reflective of the will of the people,” said a Jackson County Election Board spokesperson. “We thank our neighbors for stepping up and exercising their constitutional right to vote.”
