Durant, Oklahoma – Near the U.S. 69/75 corridor, a single sanctuary now serves a congregation that once worshipped in two separate buildings. Five years ago, the Northwest Church of Christ and the Seventh and Beech Church of Christ united to become Durant Church of Christ, a move described by minister Logan Cates as “flawless” and a vivid picture of Christian unity.
Why the two churches chose to join
Both congregations recognized a shared need for greater fellowship and resource consolidation. “We knew there was a need and both congregations knew that,” Cates explained. “The elders met together – three elders from each side – and they decided, hey, why not?” The decision was not driven by doctrinal differences; rather, it was a practical step toward serving God together.
Early days of the merger
Recalling the first Sunday after the merger, Cates said, “It was like the greatest day because you just see people coming in, you’re shaking their hands, and you realize this is permanent. 140, 150 people are coming in and you don’t know them real well.” The warm reception affirmed the wisdom of the union and set a tone of mutual love and respect that continues to define the church.
Growth and challenges
Since the merger, attendance has steadily risen, prompting a need for more space. “Our offices are in toddler rooms,” Cates noted, highlighting the creative use of existing facilities. The congregation’s expansion has spurred plans for a new building that will provide a larger auditorium and dedicated office space. Construction is slated to begin within the next year, promising a permanent home for the growing community.
Leadership and vision
Durant Church of Christ is led by three ministers, with Cates serving as one of them. Their shared vision emphasizes unity, service, and the nurturing of a vibrant Christian family. The church’s leadership remains committed to fostering an environment where families can grow in faith together, reflecting the broader values of traditional families and individual liberty cherished by the community.
Looking ahead
As the new building project moves forward, the congregation anticipates continued growth and deeper outreach. The merger stands as a testament to what can be achieved when believers set aside differences and focus on a common purpose: serving God and strengthening the local faith community.
