The DuPage County Division of Transportation announced that a new pedestrian‑actuated traffic signal will go live on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, at the Great Western Trail crossing on County Farm Road in Winfield. The signal, which has been in development since late 2025, is designed to give pedestrians, cyclists and motorists clearer, safer crossing conditions.
Project background and design
In late 2025 the Division of Transportation conducted traffic studies to measure vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle volumes at the crossing. Those studies confirmed a need for a dedicated signal to manage the growing mix of trail users and road traffic. Earlier improvements at the site included a median island that separates northbound and southbound traffic on County Farm Road.
Mary FitzGerald Ozog, Chair of the DuPage Transportation Committee, said, “Safety is paramount for pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists. This new signal will significantly benefit residents, providing both people using the trail and motorists on this stretch of road with a greater sense of security. Clear signage for pedestrians and motorists will alert them to the new traffic conditions, when to stop and when it is safe to cross.”
How the signal works
The new installation features pedestrian push‑buttons and standard walk/don’t‑walk indications for trail users, alongside the familiar red‑yellow‑green lights for drivers. The signal will only halt vehicular traffic when a trail user activates the push‑button, ensuring minimal disruption while still protecting those crossing.
Signal timing will be coordinated with nearby intersections at St. Charles Road and Illinois Route 64 (North Avenue). Electronic message boards and temporary signs will be placed along County Farm Road in the days leading up to activation to inform drivers of the upcoming change. Additional signage will be installed on the trail to guide pedestrians and cyclists.
Community impact
Local residents and trail enthusiasts can expect a smoother, safer crossing experience. The permanent signage and real‑time signals aim to reduce uncertainty for families walking the trail with children, seniors, and anyone using the path for recreation or commuting.
