Philadelphia‑based Duo Taco is celebrating growth with the opening of a second restaurant in Center City. The new address joins the original Chester location at 540 Avenue of the States, offering the same house‑made consommé‑based chicken birria that has become a local favorite.
Menu highlights and kitchen concept
Owners Roland Taylor and his wife Lucia built Duo Taco around their signature chicken birria, a slow‑cooked stew served with fresh, made‑to‑order tacos. The menu also features barbacoa, blackened salmon, crab cake tacos and vegan options such as shiitake mushroom. An open kitchen lets diners watch birria ramen being prepared, with noodles, consommé and layered taco ingredients, and even offers the option to turn taco toppings into a rice bowl.
Afro‑Mexican roots
Roland, who grew up cooking soul food with his grandmother in Chester, PA, met Lucia and together they blended those Southern flavors with Mexican cuisine, coining the term “Afro‑Mexican” for their unique style. Their partnership reflects a commitment to family‑centered entrepreneurship and community‑focused dining.
Community celebration
Each year Duo Taco hosts a party for the city after the Chester High School football team’s homecoming game. This year the celebration moves to Chester Park on October 17, 2026, marking the first time the event will be held in the park. The owners hope the gathering will become a lasting community tradition, bringing families and neighbors together in a festive setting.
Impact on local economy
The Center City expansion adds jobs and expands the local food scene, supporting Philadelphia’s vibrant restaurant landscape. By offering diverse menu options—including vegan selections—Duo Taco appeals to a broad cross‑section of diners, reinforcing the city’s reputation for culinary innovation.
