Detroit will host a special screening of the documentary We Finished Their Journey: the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Swim on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle. The film captures a remarkable 411‑mile swim that began on July 26, 2025, over the site of the famed shipwreck and concluded in Detroit after more than a month of effort.
Swimmers and Stages
The tribute involved 70 dedicated athletes who completed the route in 17 separate stages. Event Director Jim “the Shark” Dreyer said the participants “pushed their personal limits to write a new chapter in the legacy of the Edmund Fitzgerald” and to keep the memory of the 29 crew members alive for their families.
Filmmakers’ Perspective
Executive Producer and Director Corey Adkins described the project as his most complex documentary to date, noting that viewers will hear over 20 distinct personal stories from the swimmers. “You’d think watching 70 swimmers for that many miles would be boring, but it wasn’t – you’re in for a treat,” Adkins said.
Fundraising Impact
Proceeds from the swim were donated to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society to support upkeep of the Whitefish Point light‑tower. Bruce Lynn, GLSHS Executive Director, expressed gratitude, saying the society was honored to receive the funds and that the documentary will help keep the ship’s bell and its history in the public eye.
