Denison residents may soon see smaller, lower‑cost trash containers on their streets as the city’s Solid Waste Division prepares to expand its collection options. At the regular City Council meeting on Monday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m., council members will consider a purchase request for a new truck that can transport these smaller containers.
According to a staff report filed by Assistant Public Works Director John Phillips, the division plans to begin renting out the smaller containers as a more affordable collection choice for households and businesses. Because the containers are smaller than the standard units currently in use, the division needs a vehicle that can drop them off and pick them up efficiently. The proposed truck, priced at $73,350, would be sourced from Huffines CDJR and is ready for immediate delivery if the council approves the purchase.
The purchase is listed on the council’s consent agenda, meaning it will be bundled with routine items and passed with a single vote unless a council member requests a separate discussion. The cost has already been earmarked in the city’s 2027 budget as a capital expenditure and will be financed through that allocation.
While the staff packet does not disclose the rental rates for the new containers, their dimensions, or a launch date for the service, it emphasizes that the truck will allow the Solid Waste Division to keep service reliable as the program grows. By offering a lower‑cost option, the city hopes to provide residents with more flexibility in managing their waste while maintaining the consistency of collection schedules.
City officials have highlighted that the new vehicle will enable the division to expand the container program without compromising existing service levels. The ability to quickly deliver and retrieve the smaller containers is seen as essential for meeting the anticipated increase in demand, especially in neighborhoods where space for larger bins is limited.
Council members will hear the recommendation during the Nov. 2 meeting held in the council chambers at City Hall, 300 W. Main St. Residents who wish to comment on the proposal are encouraged to attend the meeting or submit written feedback to the council office before the vote.
What’s next: If approved, the truck could be delivered immediately, allowing the Solid Waste Division to begin the rental program as soon as operational details—such as container sizes and pricing—are finalized. The council’s decision will be recorded in the meeting minutes and made publicly available on the city’s website.
