PHOENIX — With just one week left before Arizona’s November 8 election, a HighGround poll released Tuesday shows Democrats maintaining sizable leads in the three top statewide races.
Poll numbers
The survey, conducted by the Phoenix‑based political firm, finds Governor Katie Hobbs ahead of Republican challenger Andy Biggs by 12 points. Democrat Adrian Fontes leads Republican Alexander Kolodin for secretary of state by 11 points, and Democrat Kris Mayes holds an 11‑point advantage over Republican Warren Petersen for attorney general.
These margins are notable in a state where registered Republicans outnumber Democrats by roughly 300,000 voters.
Local reactions
At Joe’s Diner in Phoenix, longtime resident Michael Filson said he has already decided to support Hobbs. “Well first of all I think she’s done a good job. And second of all, her opponent is a jerk,” he said, adding that the influence of President Trump on the race is a factor for him. “The Republicans all seem to be following Trump and I’m not interested in Trump,” Filson explained.
Filson also joked that he hasn’t had pancakes yet, noting how many voters have already cast their ballots in early voting.
Trump’s standing in Arizona
The poll notes that President Donald Trump’s approval rating in Arizona is now in the mid‑to‑low 30s, a figure that appears to be affecting the performance of GOP candidates who have been endorsed by or aligned with the Trump administration.
Undecided voters
While the leads are clear, the poll acknowledges a small pool of undecided voters who could still influence the final outcome. Nicole Phillips, a Phoenix voter, said she is still researching the candidates. “My daughter and I stand on two different sides of the fence and she’s got some very strong, young, opinions and so I’m listening to her and hearing her out,” Phillips said.
Phillips represents the remaining segment of the electorate that has not yet made a final decision, though the poll suggests that such voters are becoming fewer as Election Day draws near.
What’s next
With only a week left, campaign teams are expected to intensify outreach to the remaining undecided voters while encouraging supporters to turn out at the polls. The HighGround poll will be one of several snapshots of voter sentiment leading up to the November election.
