Democratic candidates hold community forum for Northwest Arkansas voters in Springdale

On Wednesday evening, the Jones Center in Springdale became a hub for local political engagement as Democratic candidates for state and federal office gathered for a “Meet the Candidates” forum. The event, organized by Washington County Democrats, Natural State Vote and the OMNI Center for Peace, Justice and Ecology, gave voters a chance to hear directly from the candidates and ask questions in an informal setting.

Candidates on the stage

Fred Love, the Democratic candidate for governor, opened the night with a statement emphasizing his commitment to expanding economic opportunity and protecting families across Arkansas. Following Love, Robb Ryerse, running for Arkansas’ 3rd Congressional District, outlined his priorities for infrastructure investment and rural broadband access. State House candidate Courtney King then spoke about education reform and supporting small businesses in the region. U.S. Senate candidate Hallie Shoffner was unable to attend; she was represented by Will Watson, who delivered a brief remarks on her platform.

Interactive format

The forum featured a moderated question‑and‑answer segment, allowing audience members to pose issues ranging from health‑care affordability to environmental stewardship. Joanna Person‑Michener, co‑director of Natural State Vote, noted that the format helps voters hear from candidates who may not appear at larger, more partisan gatherings. “You may hear tonight some candidates that are not represented in some of the other forums here in Northwest Arkansas,” she said, highlighting the value of local outreach.

Community service component

In addition to the political discussion, organizers incorporated a mutual‑aid collection benefiting Cooperative Emergency Outreach. Attendees were encouraged to bring toiletries and other necessities to assist people experiencing homelessness in the area. The collection underscored the event’s dual focus on civic participation and community compassion.

Local significance

Springdale, the fifth‑largest city in Arkansas, sits at the heart of the state’s northwest corridor, a region that has become increasingly competitive in recent election cycles. By hosting the forum in a central, accessible venue, the organizers aimed to boost voter awareness ahead of upcoming primaries and general‑election contests.

Looking ahead

All three candidates expressed optimism about connecting with voters in person and pledged to continue touring the region throughout the campaign season. The forum demonstrated how grassroots events can foster dialogue, encourage civic responsibility and strengthen the democratic process at the local level.
